Monday, monday...

It was sunny and warm for most of Tuesday.

I went to Time Out and had a salad. That was a mistake. First of all, it was HUGE Then it was topped with a whole grilled chicken breast, crunchy crumbled bacon and hard boiled egg, cut in half. I couldn't eat even half of it, but I think I gained 10 pounds.

Michelle from Facilities brought me over some Pasta Fazole soup, but I forgot to take it out of the fridge and home! So, I made yet another smoked turkey sandwich for dinner and ate that along with some coleslaw.

I was looking through the TV guide for something interesting to watch when I came across a B movie called Machete starring Danny Trejo. It was pretty dumb with a lot of gratuitous violence. I loved it!

I went to bed at 10:00 p.m. when it ended.

Slow Sunday

I finally woke up for real at 6:30 a.m. after waking up every damn hour all night long. I seriously need to reset my internal clock!

I made soft boiled eggs for breakfast. In case you haven't noticed, I've loved soft boiled eggs since my childhood.

I did the normal Sunday morning chores, then I shaved, showered and got dressed.

Weather check: It was cold and windy at 29 degrees. At least it was sunny and not snowing (yesterday was brutal). Thank God I didn't have to go out today.

I watched the news until 10:00 p.m. Then I turned off the TV and turned on WDET. I started cleaning the house.

My friend B__ called. So, I shut off the radio (I had it really loud to hear over the vacuum). We talked for a long time, catching up.

When I checked my phone after we hung up, I realized I'd missed a couple of texts from Jake and a call from Melissa yesterday when my phone was turned off. Sorry...

I also realized how tired I really was and that Ann Delise on WDET wasn't cutting it. So, I went hard core and put on Paul Simon's Graceland album (you can call me Al), my go-to inspiration for cleaning, back in the day. I finished up at 2:30 p.m. and dumped all the cat hair into the trash can.

I managed to vacuum the entire house and then made more coleslaw mix (I use just half a jar of the dressing per bag). I let that get happy in the fridge. And then I took a well-deserved nap.

I woke up at 5:30 p.m. and started dinner. I was cold and wanted warm comfort food, so I made some chicken noodle soup. I had thawed out some boneless, skinless chicken thighs.

NOTE: This is not a recipe, nor was I following one. I was winging it.

So I sauteed two diced celery stalks, a big diced carrot and half of a large onion, also diced, in a chunk of butter and a little olive oil. When they were softened, I added the pouching (sp) liquid I'd saved from last weeks pulled chicken adventure. I added another box of chicken stock and two cups of water. I threw in the chicken thighs to let them simmer (I am not going to try and spell "pouch" again, okay?)

Here's where I think I fncked up. In addition to salt and pepper, I threw in a bay leaf. Big mistake!

I let that get happy for a half an hour or so. Then I took out the thighs and set them on the cutting board. When they cooled, I diced them up. I threw them back into the broth along with a handful of fresh flat leaf (or Italian) parsley and three minced garlic cloves.

I put in half a bag of Kluski noodles and let that go for a while and then tasted it Damn!

It tasted a bit too... Heavy or something. Not sure if it was using chicken thighs or the bay leaf, but something was off. But, I still managed to eat two bowls of it and then put the rest in the fridge.

I watched a little TV and went to bed at 11:00 p.m.

The Saturday Show.

I didn't sleep well again. I also didn't set my alarm (I always get up early, so why bother?). Of course today, I slept in (after waking up all night long) and had to hustle to make my 9:00 a.m. haircut.

From there, I went to Kroger's for a few items. Finally I hit up Costco for more peanuts for the squirrels. I got home around 11:00 a.m.

I put the tab on the bike after unloading the truck. Then I went out back and refilled the feeders. I have a lot of branches down and several wet spots in the back yard

Oh, by the way, the cold front that caused the bad weather yesterday decided to stay. It was snowing occasionally, with a stiff wind and temps in the low 30's in the morning.

I stripped the bed and washed the sheets and pillow cases. Then I made myself a turkey sandwich for lunch.

Next, I changed out of my "Saturday errands" clothes and into something a little more polished. I left the cat and the house at 12:45 p.m. and drove to Vicky's house. Believe it or not, we were going to the opera!

I got a hug from Evy, Vicky and Yanessa and then we all piled into Vicky's truck. We drove the few minutes from Mexican Town to downtown and the Michigan Opera House.

When we got there, Vicky paralleled parked on the street. But we didn't know how long the show lasted and we didn't want her to get a parking ticket, so both Evy and I urged her to use the opera house parking structure. That turned out to be a big mistake. But more on that later.

We walked the chilly street and joined the throng entering the Opera House. It is a beautiful old structure, BTW. I got a couple of pictures before we were told that all cell phones had to be turned off.

That's right. You guessed it. We were going to see the Broadway production of the Lion King!

It was fabulous! I've never seen the movie, but I loved this so much. I was fascinated by the costumes, the set and the story.

At the intermission, Vicky and Yanessa went off to get some popcorn and water, while I went to find the men's room. Unfortunately, while we were in the first balcony on the second floor, the men's room was in the basement. Lots and lots of steps with my cane and a waiting line a mile long...

But, I made it back in time.

At the end of the show, we joined the masses heading back out. There was a guy playing a trumpet on the sidewalk that fascinated Yanessa.  Then we joined the long line to get into the elevator at the parking structure. We were on Level Six, by the way. So, we finally got on the elevator and up to the right level. We piled back into the truck and got in the line to go down and out.

It moved about one car length every couple of minutes. That's when Victoria kept reminding us that, had she keep her street parking spot, we would be at the restaurant by now. Sigh... Yanessa fell asleep before we got back on the street.

The origianl idea was to eat dinner at Pegasus in Greek Town but, even though it was only 5:30 p.m., it was packed. So, Vicky checked out so other restaurants around town. Same thing.

We ended up eating at Los Galanes in Mexican Town, about five minutes from their house. Their parking lot was full and we ended up parking on the street and walking in the bitter cold. We had to wait a bit for a table, but they had a bench so it was no big deal.

Yanessa was still asleep in Evy's arms, but she finally woke up and ate all the tortilla chips while we waited for the food!

I ordered my usual beef enchiladas, Evy got the steak fajitas and Victoria got the pollo milanesa (a breaded flattened chicken beast topped with cheese and a Spanish sauce). Yanessa got a little off of everyone's plates. My enchiladas were good, the fried bean were fried beans, but I was very disappointed with the rice.

Sidebar: I don't want to sound prejudiced, but Puerto Rican rice is much more flavorful than Mexican.

We made the short trip to their house. I went in, only to make my goodbyes (it was about 7:30 p.m. and already dark and I don't do dark driving well). I got my usual hugs from Vicky and Evy and an enormous one on my leg from Yanessa. I also promised to send a text when I was in my house (it's a family thing).

I was home and had sent my obligatory text, so I got the sheets out of the dryer and made the bed up.

I looked for anything interesting on TV but didn't see much. My legs hurt (from all the steps, I guess), so I just went to be.

It was a good day.

Belated Friday Post

It was warm again on Friday, but I wore my raincoat. There was a threat of severe thunderstorms (even possibly a tornado) beginning around 5:00 p.m.

Instead of going to lunch, I went to the Secretary of State office. Dispite all my searching, I cannot find the "safe" place I put the bike tab.

Sidebar: I remember it vividly. I got the truck and bike tabs in the mail in mid-December. It was cold that day. I had the garage door open so I could get to the back of the truck. I washed the truck license plate off and dried it. Then I went into the house to warm up. I went back outside and put the tab on. I thought about the bike and then said, "Screw it. I'm not going to ride it for the next four months!" So, I took the registration off to laminate it and put the tab in a safe place.

It was so safe even I can't find it!!!

Anyway, I went to the one on Wayne Road at 11:00 a.m. It was crowded (of course), but this time I decided to use the handicapped spot. I got my ticket (#89) and they were on #41. However, there were three handicapped people in front of me. By the time I got there, the woman had disappeared!

I think she went on break or something., since she came back about 15 minutes later. It cost me just $5.00 but as I was leaving they were calling for #81. So, it wasn't all that much faster.

I stopped at Arby's and got a roast beef sandwich meal. I ate that at my desk.

It started raining early here (around 3:00 p.m.) We had thunder and lightning with lots of rain and dramatic winds.

Courtney's husband went home and sent her a picture of hail at their house (about two miles west of me) but we didn't get any hail at work.

Luckily, there was a brief pause went I went home. But, when I got there what I thought was snow piled up around the west side of the house turned out to be hail.

And, the high winds had stripped needles off my pine trees and plasered them onto the house siding!

Looks like I'll have to power wash the house come real Spring.

I decided to do the weekend wash (minus the bedding) early as I would be busy on Saturday. As you know, my washer is screwed up. But when I put it in the dryer, the dryer wouldn't start! WTF!!!

I kept trying different things until I finally checked my new fuse box. Sure enough, the lightning (or something) tripped the fuse. Remind me why I paid extra to have a whole house surge protector?

I ate the last of the brats for dinner. I was tired again and went to bed early.

Friday, February 24, 2017

We broke another temperature record on Thursday. It was already 58 degrees when I left for work, so I didn't wear a coat.

It was sunny, so after lunch I took a drive through Hines Park again.

We hit a high of 67 degrees in Redford.

After getting home, treating the cat and changing clothes. I opened the windows.

I made another smoked turkey sandwich for dinner and ate it watching the news.

I was really tired, so about 8:30 p.m. I closed the windows and went to bed.

Thursday, February 23, 2017

It was a little foggy on Wednesday morning and stayed overcast all day. But, it was warm again! I think we hit 65 degrees. In Michigan? In February?  Unbelievable!!!

Sidebar: On the other hand, I remember this happening two or three years ago. All the trees started to bud and then it got cold again. We lost most of the apple and cherry crop that year. So, unless it stays warm, this is not a good thing.

I ate a bowl of some really great split pea and ham soup at Time Out for lunch. I was supposed to pick up a toy box to repair and change into a bench, but Amanda forgot to ask her old man to load it into the car. I told her I'd try again tomorrow.

Back home after work, I refilled the feeders. Then I walked around to check on the gardens. The hostas are starting to pop up. Then I checked on the crocus and found this on Jake's patio:

I ate the last of the chicken fried rice for dinner.

I cleaned the main bathroom and then watched some TV. But, I went to bed early.

The Tuesday Tale

It was still unseasonably warm on Tuesday, but it was cloudy and overcast. As  usual, I took the trashcan out to the road before I left for work.

It was sprinkling at lunch time, but finally sunny on the way home. I left the truck outside and retrieved the trashcan and the mail.

Inside, I changed clothes and went out to the garage. I did the final sanding on the two little cradles. They looked pretty good!

I cleaned up the area and then pulled the truck back inside.

I ate the last of the steak with mushrooms and the other potato for dinner.

I watched both NCIS and NCIS New Orleans and then went to bed.

Tuesday, February 21, 2017

It was a little cooler on Monday (low 60's) with a breeze. So, we didn't break any records today. But, it was nice and sunny.

Courtney was very proud of the cheesy potato soup she'd made over the weekend so she brought me in some.

I went to Time Out for lunch and got just a Reuben sandwich. They are big and I could only eat half of it. So, Dan brought me a take out box and I took it out. I took a drive through Hines Park before returning to work.

When I got home after work, I washed my bloody sheets.

Sidebar: There seems to be something wrong with my washer. It doesn't spin the clothes as good as it used to be. So, they are dripping wet when I take them out and I have to dry them twice as long. I have to start searching for a repairman, I guess...

I ate the soup (it was good, BTW) and ate the half sandwich for my dinner.

I came across a good movie (The Hobbit - Battle of the Five Armies) an I watched it from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Then I went to bed.

Monday, February 20, 2017

I slept in again and finally got up at 8:00 a.m. I made some soft boiled eggs for breakfast and watched the news.

About 10:00 a.m., I shaved showered and got dressed in my work clothes. I pulled the truck out so I could work in the garage. But, I noticed how dusty it was. So I drove it to the quarter car wash just down the street and ran it through the automatic wash bay.

I drove it back home and dried it off with a towel.

Then I went inside and set up my work table in the garage and assembled the second baby doll cradle.

I used the brand to mark them as "Handmade by Papa John" and the year. I still need to do the finally sanding, but we are close to being done.

I forgot to tell you, but on Saturday I stopped in the Honeybaked ham store and got a smoked turkey breast. So, today, I ate a smoked turkey breast sandwich for lunch.

I was watching the Red Wings game when I absentmindedly reached over and petted the damn cat. She bit me and I got blood on my sheets before I could get a bandage on!!!

The Red Wings won!

I had some of Michelle's dill pickle soup for dinner.

I watched a little TV before an early bed time.

Sunday, February 19, 2017

Sunny Saturday!

I didn't sleep well and, as a result, I finally woke up at 7:30 a.m.! I got a cup off coffee and watched what was left of the news.

Then I made some scrambled eggs for breakfast.

I mostly farted around inside until noon. Then I shaved, showered and got dressed.

I left early for my 3:00 p.m. eye exam up in Farmington. I wanted to pick out some new glasses first.

Sidebar: This is NOT the year insurance will pay for them (it's every two years, you see). But I hate the ones I got last year. They are too small (or something) and they press up against my temples. Plus the weight of them on my nose seems to make my nose run. So, I decided to just buy new ones.

I was dreading this appointment, BTW. It's only been six months, but the eye doctor was worried about the progression of my cataracts. I have been operated on my shoulder, my back and my leg (repeatedly), but the idea of somebody operating on my eyes is frightening.

On the way up, the A/C kicked on. So, I shut it off and opened the window. People were out everywhere (walking, running, sitting on benches) enjoying the day.

It made me laugh. In South Carolina, people would be wearing coats and complaining about how cold it was. In Michigan, people are out in t-shirts and shorts, enjoying the warm day.

It took a while to find a parking space but I was eventually in the eye doctor's around 2:30 p.m. I signed in and spent a little time picking out my new frames.

The doctor was done early with his last appointment, so I got in early. My appointment went amazingly well. He was surprised (as was I) that my cataracts had remained the same!

He warned me if I saw any new symptoms, I should get in right away. But, I don't have to go back for a full year!!!

I told him I wanted new glasses and explained why. He warned me that my insurance wouldn't cover it and I said I didn't care.

So, he measured the frames I picked out for my bifocals. I always get the anti-scratch coating, but he urged me to buy the anti-glare coating as well. He said it would help with night driving.

After they came up with a price, the doctor knocked off $150.00! He said I was a long-term patient and, anyway, they should have caught that the last one didn't fit right. I can live with that.

On the way back home, I stopped at Kroger's and got a nice New York strip steak and some brats.

Once home, the light wind was coming from the west. So, I opened the west-facing window downstairs, one of the living room windows and my bedroom window to air out the house.

I got the drill and a wire brush attachment and cleaned the winter rust off the grill. Then I started some charcoal. I dumped it in and oiled the grill. Then I cooked the brats (for this coming week) and the steak.

I put the steak on an oval aluminum sizzler platter and stuck it in the oven on low.

I sauteed some mushrooms I had while I "baked" a potato in the microwave. I put some of the mushrooms over half the steak and ate it with the potato, dressed in butter and sour cream.

Sidebar: I was disappointed. I overcooked the steak (or left it in the oven too long). Don't get me wrong, it was delicious. But it was not medium-rare, the way I like it. I guess I'm out of practice.

I put the rest of the steak and the brats in the fridge.

I watched some TV until bedtime.

Saturday, February 18, 2017

Finally Friday

It was cloudy and a little warmer on Friday morning.

Saturday is supposed to be awesome, BTW, in the 60's and sunny!!!

I went to Time Out for the Friday fish and chips.

I stopped at CVS to get more mouthwash. Since I was there anyway (and had no real dinner plans), I stopped into the China House (next door to CVS). I ordered a quart of chicken fried rice. Well, I didn't actually order it. I just opened the door and both the mother and the daughter yelled, "Chicken fried rice?" I nodded and went to CVS.

Back home,  I stuck my chicken fried rice in the microwave. I'm pretty sure it's not true, but I believe is has insulation enough to keep it warm for a while.

I treated the cat and went out back to refill the feeders. It was sunny by then, but still cool.

Back inside, I ate my dinner watching the news. The other half of the quart went into the fridge for weekend lunches.

I checked the TV guide (nothing) so I went back to taped shows and gout caught up on the "Vikings." Then I went to bed.

Friday, February 17, 2017

It was a bit warmer on Thursday. But, it was overcast on the drive in and stayed that way for most of the day.

Courtney came in (briefly). Her daycare called about an hour later and said Aiden (her two year old) was throwing up. So, she went to get him and worked from home. But, she did bring me in some lasagna!

I went to the Newburgh Grille for lunch and got a cup of tomato orzo soup and a patty melt.

Back home, I started the Wednesday wash a day late. I watched the news for a bit. I made a simple salad and topped it with bottled Italian dressing. I warmed up her lasagna and had an excellent supper.

Then I washed the kitchen floor. Which meant I couldn't put the laundry in the dryer. Sigh... I should have thought that one through.

So, I watched taped TV until the floor was dry. Then I put the laundry in the dryer and went to bed.

Thursday, February 16, 2017

It was cold again on Wednesday. After Tuesday's 50 degree high, this was disappointing (and cold!)

I went to Big Boy's and got the cup of soup (chicken noodle) and the half of a turkey sandwich for lunch. Then I went across the parking lot to the Ace hardware and bought (another) nail set punch.

Sidebar: I have two or three of them but with the house in such disarray, I can't find one.

Back home after work, I watched the news (depressing). Then I got a call from Vicky. We talked for a long time. The biggest news was that Yanessa has pneumonia. Poor kid! But, she's on the mend.

I ate the last of the pulled chicken for a late dinner. I read for a bit and then went to bed.

Birthday Shoutout!

Happy birthday to my brother Jim, who turns 80 today!

Valentine's Day

It was chilly, but clear when I dragged the trash can out to the road on Tuesday.

I went to Time Out for lunch and got a burger. Amanda gave me a little bag of white chocolate bark she had made the night before. She put something pink in the melted chocolate and then swirled it around with a toothpick. It was very pretty.

Sidebar: She did not make this for me, BTW. She made it for her boyfriend and their seven year old son. But, she warned them not to eat it all because she was bringing some in for me.

It was an amazing 50 degrees when I got home after work. So, instead of cleaning the house, I spent some time outside in the back, picking up fallen branches.

Then, back inside, I swept the downstairs, kitchen and the bathroom.

I warmed up Michelle's cabbage soup. I think I got the end of the pot, because there was very little cabbage, mostly just sausage. The broth was much thicker than Melissa's version, but it was excellent!

I watched NCIS  (it was continued onto NCIS New Orleans) but I went to bed.

Tuesday, February 14, 2017

Happy Valentine's Day!!!

It was chilly Monday morning, but it warmed up nicely.

My friend Michelle from Facilities dropped off two kinds of soup: Cabbage and dill pickle. I didn't see her (I was in the bathroom), so I sent her an email, thanking her. She wrote me back and said the cabbage soup was a riff of mine (well, my daughter Melissa's really). She said she didn't have any spicy V8, so she used half a bottle of tomato juice and have a bottle of Bloody Mary mix. Since this was going to be dinner for her and her husband, she threw in some sliced sausage as well. Sounds interesting!

The dill pickle soup sounds interesting as well. I think that's a Polish dish.

I went to Ten Yen for lunch. I wasn't that hungry, so I just got some won ton soup and an egg roll. Then I took a drive through Hines Park back to work.

Back home after work, I had planned on cleaning the house (I have sawdust tracked everywhere). But I started watching the news instead. My leg hurt.

I got a call from both my brother Joe and his wife, Kathy.

I made an executive decision that cleaning the house could wait.

I ate some more of the barbecue chicken sandwiches for dinner and went to bed early.

Monday, February 13, 2017

I woke up at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday. I watched some of the news for a while. Then I got a cup of coffee and my blueberry muffin. Breakfast was awesome!

I did the usual Sunday morning chores. Then I shaved, showered and got dressed.

About 10:30 a.m., I backed the truck outside to make room. It was lightly snowing ice pellets and I congratulated myself on the wisdom of declining making the trip up to Washington.

I set up the table (two saw horses and a leftover piece of plywood) and turned on the air compressor

I carefully cut the bottoms down to match the ends.

Sidebar: I should have given that a little more thought and cut them down on the same angle as the ends.

I decided to make just one, time permitting. Ever since that heavy rain on Tuesday, my arthritis has flared up and I'm having to use my cane. The cold, cement floor in the garage is not helping, either.

So, I put on the ends with glue and a brad nailer. I marked and cut down the sides (I am using flat lattice for the sides so it wouldn't look so massive - it's too small for 1x3's.) This is where that angle cut on the bottom became apparent. There was a slight gap between both sides and the bottom board.

I let that sit and dry while I made the rockers. I had originally bought a pre-made round, thick table top for the little book table. But, it turned out to be too big for that project. So, it's just been sitting here, collecting dust. I thought it would be perfect for the rockers. Rockers are the hardest part - you have to get them matching or it rocks stupid. So, using my square, I marked off 3-inch high rockers and cut two off with the Skil saw.

BTW, the sun came out around noon. Then I felt stupid for not going to Jim's birthday luncheon.

I attached the rockers with deck screws, after pre-drilling the holes so nothing would split. I took it in the house to show Caley and to take a picture for you.

By then it was almost 5:00 p.m. and my knees were killing me. So, I put everything away and got the truck inside.

I was hungry, so I made dinner. I poached three fat chicken breast in chicken stock for 15 minutes. I took the chicken out with tongs and shredded them with two forks. I put the stock in a container and into the fridge for soup or something. Then I put the chicken back in the pot, added a generous amount of Sweet Baby Ray's barbecue sauce and turned the burn on low to warm it up.

While that was getting happy, I made some coleslaw, with a bag of shredded coleslaw and bottled dressing.

I put some of the pulled chicken on two sesame seed hamburger buns and put some coleslaw in a dish and ate a delicious dinner!

When I took my plate back to the kitchen I noticed just how windy if had gotten. I'll be picking up branches tomorrow, for sure!

I watched the last part of an old Western and went to bed at 9:30.

Sunday, February 12, 2017

Suddenly Saturday

I woke up at 4:00 a.m. on Saturday, which p*ssed me off, because I couldn't fall back asleep. So, I read a Food Network magazine until the news came on at 6:00. At 8:15, I shaved showered and got ready for the errand run.

First stop was my bi-weekly haircut and beard trim.

From there I went to Kroger's. There were a surprising small amount of people there! It wasn't that cold (34 degrees F.), no wind and no precipitation. WTF?

Anyway, I used it to my advantage and stocked up. I spent a short time in line at the checkout and $130.00 bucks. But, I'm set for a while (except for carrots - I forgot I didn't have any carrots...)

From there, I went to Westborn, originally to just pick up some fresh grated Parmesan cheese. But, I made two impulse buys: a big fat, fresh blueberry muffin (damn they are expensive, but taste so good) and a container of big fat green olives, stuffed with Blue Cheese. Cost me almost $14.00 but it will be worth it.

Next I hit up Home Depot for what seemed like a simple buy. But, I needed two boards cut to four feet and it took FOREVER to get a guy to come and cut them.

I stopped at CVS. Then I crossed the parking lot to fill up the truck with gas at the corner station.

Back home, I left the truck outside to unload it. It took a while, but I got it done. It was 12:30 p.m. and I hadn't eaten breakfast, so I made a turkey sandwich for lunch and ate it with some of those olives.

I went out back and refilled the squirrel feeder, replaced the suet cake and scattered more bird seed on the ground.

Then I changed into my work clothes and went out in the garage. It was a little chilly, so I lit the propane heater. Then I started on my project.

Sidebar: Courtney at work has two small boys, aged one and two. She recently bought two matching dolls at a garage sale for them and was saying she wished she could find two little cribs for them. Now, making a crib would be a pain in the butt, so I thought I could knock together two cradles for them.

I started cutting the boards for them. There were a lot of angles and it was a lot of work. But finally I had the main bodies cut out. I was about to glue and nail them together when I realized the bottoms were about a quarter inch wider than the ends! Damn!!!

By then it was 5:30 p.m. and I was tired from standing. So, I set everything aside, pulled the truck inside and locked everything up for the night.

I warmed up a can of Wolf brand chili for my dinner.

I watched some TV but went to bed before 9:00 p.m.

Saturday, February 11, 2017

It was a little warmer on Friday, so I just wore my leather coat. It was a little windy, early, but (thank God) no snow.

I went to Time Out for my usual Friday lunch: Fish and chips.

From there, I went to CVS on Newburgh Road for some Valentine's Day cards and one birthday card.
Next I went across the street and got the truck washed (the salt was getting on my clothes). It's not supposed to get bad again until Sunday.

Sidebar: My nephew Jim and his wife Deanna are hosting an 80th birthday luncheon for my brother Jim on Sunday. I reluctantly declined their invitation. I have trouble enough just driving the five miles to work in bad weather, much less driving all the way to Washington, Michigan, and back.

I am becoming a wimp...

Back home, I watched the news until I got hungry. I didn't have any leftovers, but with the cold weather, I thought some chili would hit the spot. However, when I checked the pantry, there was none, except for the hot, no beans chili I keep to make Jake's mac & cheese with chili recipe. Damn!

So, I settled for a can of Bush's Grilling beans.

Today was payday, so I used the computer to pay some bills, made my grocery list, etc. Then I watched taped shows until I fell asleep.

Friday, February 10, 2017

Then it was Thursday

It was very cold and very windy on Thursday. I wore my heavy pea coat, gloves, a scarf and a knit cap, but it still felt like the wind was going to my core!

We had a brief but heavy snowfall around 9:00 a.m. We probably got a bit more than an inch accumulation, but it was very light snow.

I forgot to tell you that the nose piece on my old glasses fell off on Tuesday. So, I was forced to wear my new glasses (which I hate). Unfortunately, my eye doctor is closed on Wednesday. So, today, I made the drive up to Farmington and got them fixed. That took up most of my lunch hour, so I stopped at Time Out and got a bowl of soup again.

Sidebar: That's my trick when I don't have a lot of time. Nobody has to take time and cook anything, they bring it to me along with the bill I asked for, so I'm in and out in less than 10 minutes.

It seemed ever colder on the way home.

I warmed up the rest of that pulled pork sandwich and cooked some crinkle-cut fries in the toaster oven for my dinner. I watched the news for a while and then called Leon to wish him a happy birthday.

Since I was in the living room anyway, I stayed there and read until bedtime.

Birthday Shoutout!

Happy birthday to my buddy, Leon. May all your cows have twins!

Hump Day

It was cooler on Wednesday, but thankfully, not raining.

I had to go to the Credit Union, so I left at 11:30 a.m. (to avoid the noontime rush). The wait wasn't bad, so I had time for a quick bowl of soup at Time Out on the way back. Today it was cheesy potato soup. I like mine better, but it wasn't bad.

After work, I did the Wednesday wash. I ate the last of the shrimp scampi for dinner, watching the news. Then I watched the taped NCIS New Orleans. I switched to reding, but was asleep by 9:00 p.m.

Tuesday's Tale

It was supposed to be warm and rainy by Tuesday morning. Instead, it was a heavy mist and cold when I wheeled the trashcan out to the road.

But it started raining here around 9:00 a.m. and then it poured!

I went to Time Out for lunch and got a grilled chicken breast with a side of macaroni salad. The chicken smelled awesome and tasted even better!

Then I went to the CVS on Newburgh and got some birthday cards.

Sidebar: I got soaked both times, just getting from the truck to inside.

The rain had eased up a bit on the drive home after work. I got the trashcan and the mail inside and then treated the complaining cat.

I went out back and refilled the squirrel feeder and tossed more seed on the ground. The stupid birds still don't use the new feeder!

I warmed up more of the shrimp scampi for dinner. I ate that watching the news.

Sidebar: It finally warmed up to a record 56 degrees, BTW. But not until about 8:00 p.m.

I watched NCIS and then switched to reading until I fell asleep.

Monday, monday...

It was a little chilly Monday morning, but it warmed up to an amazing 40 degrees in the afternoon.

I went to Time Out and got a pulled pork sandwich for lunch. I swapped the fries for a cup of chicken noodle soup. Bob (the cook) came out asked asked me if I noticed he used kluski noodles this time. I told him I definitely did and the soup was excellent.

Sidebar: I had asked him a while back why he used spaghetti noodles snapped short instead of egg noodles. He said it was hard to keep egg noodles from turning into mush when they are kept hot all day long. I told him I understood and that I had the same problem when I froze my chicken noodle soup, so I went with kluski noodles.

I went to Larry's Foodliner (24 hours) afterwards to get some garlic.

When I got home, I filled up the squirrel feeder and threw some seed on the ground. The birds are still not using the new feeder.

I made shrimp scampi for dinner. I usually put it over linguine, but I had half a box of angel hair pasta, so I used that, instead. I watched some TV, but switched to reading when the news was over.

I fell asleep reading. When I woke up for a bathroom break, I turned off the lights. Then I went to bed.

The Weekend

I woke up at an amazing 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. It was still cold out, so I decided I really didn't need to go out grocery shopping this weekend (I assume I will regret this).

So, I stayed inside all weekend. I did laundry, a load of dishes and various small chores.

I had soft-boiled eggs for breakfast on Saturday and scrambled ones for breakfast on Sunday.

I ate the rest of the mostaccioli for Saturday's supper. But I just had snacks on Sunday night (I was watching the Super Bowl).

Regarding the Super bowl, I did see Lady Gaga's halftime show. Not a big fan, but I did notice she has some nice looking legs.

I fell asleep long before it was over and was surprised to learn on Monday morning that Tom Brady won from behind. They were down 28-3 last I knew.

Finally Friday

It was cold AF Friday morning (14 degrees here in Redford) so I reluctantly decided to ditch the leather jacket in favor of my heavy pea coat, scarf and gloves.

Sidebar: I should have worn my knit cap as well, but it messes up what's left of my hair.

I went to Time Out for lunch and got my usual Friday meal, fish and chips (with the malt vinegar I shamed the owner, Dan, into stocking.)

Sidebar: As an ex-Catholic, I still cling to the idea of eating fish on Friday.

My favorite waitress, Amanda, waited on me.  She said she was upset that she didn't get a chance to hug me the last time I was there (she was busy, so I just put the money on the table and left.)

Sidebar: This is not the first time a waitress there insisted on hugging me. Kirsten was the first.

So, I stood up and let her hug me.

Then, I ate an excellent lunch and got another hug on the way out.

I went to Lowe's and bought another bird feeder. This one has a locking lid, so maybe the plastic won't get chewed.

We had two retirement luncheons this week at the Museum (B12):  Don Mandeville on Wednesday - I met him when I was in Facilities and remodeled the front office of B01, Nice guy! And Martin Snuverink on Friday (don't remember where I first met him, but also a nice guy.) Our receptionist, Nichole, helped set up both parties. So, she brought back cupcakes. But on Friday, she also brought back leftover mostaccioli. She had two take-out boxes of it and said it was way too much for her to eat. So, I took home one box.

I went out and installed the bird feeder when I got home.

I ate half of the mostaccioli for my Friday night dinner.  It was very good!

I watched some TV before going to bed.

It was freaking cold on Thursday morning. I wore my pea coat instead of my leather coat and added gloves. I left my hat at home. It messes up what's left of my hair.

At least it wasn't snowing...

I forgot to mention I have been investigating my ManTray Birthday/Christmas present from Jake and Carla (a taste of the South in your mouth). Last night, I cut into the pepperoni roll and ate about half of it with some Triscuits. It was spicy, but excellent. Thanks, guys.

Today I brought in the bourbon barrel chocolate bar and ate about a third of that with a cup of coffee. It was very un-sweet (is that a word?) and tart but really good.

I had a call yesterday afternoon from Jos. A Banks that my pants came in. So, I went to Big Boy (next to the mall) for lunch (a cup of broccoli and ham soup and the Caesar side salad). Then I went to the mall to pick up my pants. I ended up buying two shirts that were on sale. Sigh...

Back home, after work, I did some minor cleaning chores. Then I watched the news until it ended.

I steamed the beet greens that I cut off the beets I bought.

Sidebar: Why is it you can buy just the greens from about anything EXCEPT beets?

I ate them with a splash of vinegar (like Mom made them) and some more of the pot roast for dinner.

I read until bedtime.

Hump day...

It was seriously snowing again when I left for work on Wednesday. We got about another inch that was packed down on the unsalted streets. Plymouth Road was nothing more than an ice rink. I turned on the four-wheel drive, but that has nothing to do with ice.

Sidebar: I still remember my brother Pete's observation back when I bought the VW Thing. I told him I wished I could afford a four-wheel drive jeep. He said, "Four-wheel drive only gets you off-road further before you get stuck."

I don't think I ever got over 20 mph and it took an amazing half hour to get to work.

Sidebar: I think employers should be like schools and have snow days!

I went to Newburgh Grill for lunch. I got a cup of tomato orzo soup and a patty melt.

It had been sunny in the afternoon, but around 4:00 p.m., it started snowing hard again. Made the commute a bit tricky.

Back home, I started the Wednesday night wash. I went out to refill the feeders and found the squirrels had chewed through the plastic enough to break the bird feeder! Bird feeder down!!!

That sucks. I really liked that feeder. I put out some peanuts for the damn squirrels (though they didn't deserve them) and threw the feeder in the trashcan.

I ate some leftover pot roast for dinner.

I couldn't find anything interesting on TV, so I read until bedtime.

We had about three inches of snow on the ground when I took the trashcan out Tuesday morning.

Sidebar: Why does it always have to snow Monday night?

It was a little slippery driving into work.

I went to Big Boy for lunch and got a cup of chicken noodle soup and a half-sandwich of turkey on multi-grain bread.

It snowed off and on all day.

I forgot to mention that Lenore brought me in some soup on Monday. I also forgot it at work. So, today I brought it home. She called it Zuppa Toscana. It had Italian sausage, potatoes, onions, etc. in a broth that had a cup of heavy cream in it.

So, I warmed that up for my dinner. It needed salt (her husband has heart problems so she doesn't use salt) but it was excellent. I want to get the recipe!

I watched the Red Wings lose and then went to bed.
