The Saturday Story

I woke up at 4:00 a.m. on Saturday and could not fall back asleep. Every time I closed my eyes, I thought about screen doors.

Sidebar: Not today's modern storm doors with screens in them and the automatic door closer. But the old wood ones with just screens and a long-ass spring, with the wood usually unpainted.

The spring made a weird (almost musical) sound when you opened the door. And, if you just let it go, it slammed and somebody would holler at you. But it closed.

It took it's toll, though. The inside wooden frame was always gouged by the action of the spring. I can still picture that.

Back in the day, everybody had them, but the last one I remember was on the front porch door at Waconda, my grandparent's cottage in Lake Orion.

Sidebar: I have no idea why this was important enough to wake me up. I fear I am going insane.

Note to Jake: When you put me in a home, please make sure there are foxy nurses. If there are just male attendants, I will curse you!

I gave up trying to fall back asleep at 6:00 a.m. I had a cup of coffee and two pieces of toast and then ate my morning pills.I shaved, showered, dressed and left for the morning errands.

First stop was a 9:30 a.m. haircut. I went to Kroger's for groceries then Westborn for more sweet corn. I made one impulse buy at Westborn. They sell these very large and very good tasting muffins (very expensive, too). I debated over which kind to buy and ended up with a banana nut one. So, my Sunday morning breakfast is done!

Finally, I stopped at Home Depot and bought a right angle cordless drill. I need that for the wiring project. I also picked up more drywall mud.

It was sprinkling on the way home. I left the truck outside to unload it. When I got everything inside, I locked it and left it outside. I was going to work on the garage.

But, first I needed a nap!

When I woke up, it was raining steady. There goes my grilling dinner plan. But, I'll take the rain!!!

It also put an end to working in the garage. I need more daylight than I was getting.

So, I worked in the house instead. I stripped the bed and washed the bedding, swept floors, cleaned kitchen counters, etc.

When I got hungry, I ate some mild Pinconning cheese and crackers. I watched some TV and managed to stay up for Saturday Night Live (the nap helped). Then I went to bed.

  1. Unless you have some money to pay for a "home", you're already in it. The muffin sounds good.

  2. Um, no... So, I guess that's that...
