Hump Day

I woke up early again on Wednesday, dammit!

We were supposed to get thunderstorms in the morning and then severe thunderstorm in the afternoon. It did rain around 9:00 a.m., for about a half an hour, but then it quit.

Sidebar: My lawn and gardens really need some rain...

I went to Big Boy at lunch. My stomach was still not feeling great, so I thought a light lunch of a cup of broccoli and ham soup and half of a turkey sandwich on multi-grain bread would hit the spot.

The place was a madhouse! I stood there for a long time with a bunch of other people, waiting to be seated. That is, until one of my favorite waitresses snuck me in. She cleaned off a booth for me and asked if I needed a menu. I said no and gave her my order.

Sidebar: I noticed as I was waiting that there were a lot more waiters and waitresses than normal. WTF? I also notice that they were carrying TONS of the classic Big Boy Burgers on their trays. Hmmm...

That's when I noticed a tri-fold promo on my table. Apparently, because it's their 80th anniversary, any classic Big Boy Burger was just 80 cents with any Coke product on June 15th. Sigh...

The afternoon showers never occurred.

So, when I got home, I did a little more watering. Then I blew off the porch, both patios and the fire pit area.

Back inside, I started making a macaroni salad. The Building 3 summer picnic is tomorrow and I signed up to bring one.

So, I boiled a box of large elbow macaroni. While that was cooking, I roasted three red peppers on the stove grates.

I drained the macaroni in a colander and rinsed it with cold water. I set it aside.

Then I added in the red peppers (chopped fine), 1/2 cup of Wickles pickles, 1/2 cup of black olives, chopped fine, and three finely sliced green onions (both white and green).

Now I know how the mayonnaise dressing gets watery in the fridge overnight. So, I just mixed it up in a jar, to be added in the morning.

The dressing was 1/2 cup of mayonnaise, one tablespoon of red wine vinegar, three teaspoons of sugar, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, lots of fresh ground pepper, 1/4 cup of milk and a splash of the pickle juice.

I put the bowl of the macaroni and fixin's in the fridge along with the bottle of dressing. I'll put it together Thursday morning.

For dinner, I cut the ends off of two summer squash, sliced them thin and sauteed them in butter. I sliced up the rest of one of the two steaks I had grilled and heated them up in the microwave.

While they warmed, I mixed up some horseradish and mayonnaise for a steak dressing.

I plated everything and ate a delicious dinner watching Jeopardy.

I couldn't find anything interesting on TV after that, so I switched to reading until I fell asleep.

The damn weather radio woke me up at 4:00 a.m. A severe thunderstorm was hitting Munroe. I went to the bathroom and saw the security light was on. Two very fat raccoons and their smaller child (pup? welp?) were waddling over to the reflecting pool for some water. I didn't turn the light on so as not to scare them off...

It was raining and there was lightning, but I didn't seen any hail. I tried to got back to bed, but it was no use...


  1. Baby raccoons are called cubs, which is the same name for baby sharks. And, for no reason other than the fact that your Granddaughter and I are all but card-carrying nerds, we’d like you to know that a group of cats is called a clowder.

    How was Jeopardy? It’s the only thing I miss about not having cable since the 90s.

    Just so you know, Jeopardy is not on a cable station. It's on Channel 4 and if you had a roof antenna, or even "rabbit ears," you could pick it up.
