Hump Day

Background: I got two letters on Monday. One was from my Township Clerk, urging me to register for an Absentee ballot. Apparently, the new law that forbids voting a straight ticket is predicted to cause major headaches and long lines when voting. So, I did...

Sidebar: I will miss voting. I always got there before 7:00 a.m. and stood in a short line, chatting with my neighbors. It was kinda fun...

The other was from the Township as well. It told me I needed to make an appointment to get my water meter replaced. Um, okay...

But what pissed me off was a "Second Notice" taped to my front door, telling me the same thing! It said if I didn't respond within 48 hours, my water would be shut off!!!

I checked and the first letter was postmarked May 31.

Sidebar: Is this my problem that the letter took this long to get here?

So, I called on Tuesday and scheduled a two-hour window (3:00 p.m. to 5:00) for them to come today. My boss said no problem.

Anyway, I took all the stuff out of the sink cabinet before I left for work.

It was deliciously cool today.

I went to lunch at AppleBee's and had the three cheese chicken pasta and the French onion soup. I stopped on the way back to work and got the truck washed.

I left work at 2:45 p.m. and went home. They guy wasn't there yet, so I started watering the container gardens. I had just finished out front when he pulled in.

I did ask him why they needed the upgrade (I was here when they first put in the remote reader one). He said the current model (he called them the "old ones") were mechanical and required somebody to drive past the house with a reader to record the water usage. The new one is digital and transmits the information to the Internet.

So, some poor smuck is gonna get laid off...

Old meter

New meter

Location of the old sending unit (near the road on the north side)

New transmitter, right under the kitchen window.

He was gone by 4:00 p.m. I went out back and hooked up the soaker hose in the vegetable garden.

I made some boxed mac and cheese and warmed up two more brats for dinner.

I put everything back under the sink, cleaned up my dinner dishes and unhooked the hose. I read in the living room until I went to bed.

  1. Don't know if it's still the case but the smart water meters of yesteryear were particularly vulnerable to attack. Did you know that some people even hacked their own meters in order to offset their actual usage? Tsk. Tsk...

  2. You should have told me how, dammit!
