Voting Day

I woke up early on Tuesday. I always try to be at my precinct before 7:00 a.m. and today was the Michigan primary. So, I hustled.

I got there on time, but the doors were locked! WTF? So, I walked around the building and rapped on the lighted window. A very young man (he couldn't have been 18) opened the door and profusely apologized. He said their chair-person (I hate that term, BTW) had a medical emergency during the night. As a result, they had no ballots! He asked if I would please come back a little later as somebody was bringing the ballots. I said, "Sure!"

He thanked me and shook my hand. He said some folks had gotten really, really angry and went off on him. I said, "Hey, shit happens."

So, I went to work.

I took an early lunch and went back at 11:00 a.m. (I figured I'd beat the lunch crowd). The parking lot was full and my heart sank. But, this place is a township center and when I got in the voting room, there was only one person in front of me! Everybody else was somewhere else.

The young man was still there, along with an even younger girl. I asked him how the chair-person was and he said he didn't know, nobody else had shown up to help and he was in charge. I told him he was doing a great job.

I was in and out in five minutes (we had no ballot initiatives so it was pick a party and mark one name).

So, I went to Home Depot and picked up the door window. I thought it would be in a box, safely wrapped up, but, nope, it was just the window. And, it didn't even have the screws that hold the two frames together attached! An associate offer to help me load it and I took him up on his offer. I went back in and got two hot dogs for lunch.

I drove home and dropped the window off. Man, that sucker was heavy!!! There is no was I will be able to install this alone. Best case scenario is I get my neighbor to help, worst case I have to pay Home Depot folks to do it.

It was incredibly warm outside (70 degrees) and I had to put the A/C in the truck on!!!

I had a 6:00 p.m. dentist appointment, so I ended up driving home in the dark from Ford Road in Dearborn.

I warmed up the last of the clam chowder and had a delicious dinner. I watched the two NCIS shows (both reruns) and then went to bed.

  1. What's wrong with chairperson? Just curious.

  2. I thinks its just more of the "politically correct" bullshit. If its a guy, he's a chairman. If she's a lady, she's a chairwoman. Why is either of those offensive?

  3. To be fair, you never saw the person and they could be neither. They could very well have been a chair-human hybrid like Pee Wee's Chairy. How wide were the doors? Maybe that's why they couldn't get in. You'd need a couple people to sort of turn them sideways around the door jam. You said the other people were young. Perhaps they couldn't figure it out, so they invented this "didn't show up" story.

  4. I get where you’re coming from, but there are more than two genders. True, every human being on the planet started off genetically geared to become a female. But, some became male, some stayed female, and some landed somewhere in between. Saying “person” is just a respectful way of including everybody.

  5. @ Jake: If you aren’t going to turn your talent into a full-time career for your own sake, will you, please, at least write for Stephen Colbert? The world needs your funny!

  6. @ Jake: Good point!
@ Jyl: Too much PC bullshit for old guys. And, please don't encourage Jake...
