One more, just because...

True tha!!!

Finally, (finally) Friday

It has been a long week…

I thought I’d treat everybody at work, so I stopped at the Looney bakery and bought two dozen mixed donuts on Friday morning. That may have been a $15.00 mistake…

It turned out that Courtney was working from home (one of her boys were sick), my boss had to leave at 11:00 a.m. for conference and the biggest donut eater of all, Victoria, was downriver doing inventory for two days.

Sunk cost…

I had two (yeah, I admit it) and they were as great as always.

Speaking of me, I’m okay. Tri-County never called to check on me (like they said they would) but the only effect of my procedure was a bit of a sore throat and a raspy voice.

I went to lunch at Time Out and got the fish and chips. It was excellent, as always. “In Cod we trust!!!”

From there, I went and got the truck washed. I was in a long line, so everyone else had the same idea, I guess. They were too busy to wipe it completely dry, but at least I got the salt off of it.

Back at work, I spent some time wiping everything down with Clorox wipes. I had heard that one of the guys was ill on Thursday and didn’t come in today. He called in and said he had the flu. I’ve had my flu shot, but didn’t want to take any chances.

Then I started a research project for Jeff. It involved switching from ManageEngine (our new tracking software) to SpiceWorks, PeopleSoft and even RITES (a proprietary program written by Jake, back in the day) to try and discover who owns what machine. Our (Michelle and I) previous “perfect” system (just RITES and PeopleSoft) is all fncked up.

It was like a detective story, so it made the afternoon pass quickly.

I must admit, I was only successful half the time.

Back home after work, I treated Caley and changed clothes.

I watched the news until 7:00 p.m. Then I thought about dinner.

Sidebar: I know I have an addictive personality.  But I never felt it as much as tonight. I can’t have salad? But I want a salad, dammit!

Instead, I threw way both my lettuce and celery and asked Chef Mike to cook me a turkey pot pie.  And, he did.

I ate it, trying to get interested in TV. But, I gave it up and went to bed. I was almighty tired…

And meet in the middle…

I left for my brother Carl’s house at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday. It usually about an hour’s drive but I got there around 9:10. I dumped the truck in the street.

Sidebar: He always tells me there’s plenty of room in back of his house to park. But, no, no there isn’t. Plus, he usually has one of his grandkids cars back there, sitting and waiting for who knows what.

I used his bathroom, we climbed into his ride and then headed to the Tri-County Center on Garfield. There was no crip parking and the lot was full, so Carl insisted I get out at the door. Then he went and got a spot, to limp in later. Why? He’s the one walking with a cane…

THE PLACE WAS PACKED!!! Seriously packed. I went to the window and gave them my driver’s license and Blue Cross card and tried to find a seat.

When Carl finally got there, he took a seat across and kitty-corner from me, so we had to talk loudly to each other. But, you know Carl. He immediately made friends with all the people close by, so I tried to follow their conversations, while wishing I’d brought a book.

Finally, they called my name and I went in. But, it was just to verify my medical records. Then I went back outside.

I used their bathroom down the hall…

I admit I was not looking forward to this colonoscopy, but when it was finally my turn, I was more than ready. Anything was better than that waiting room!

Before I undressed, I used the bathroom inside…

The nurse hooked me up to get all my readings and stuck an I.V. in my hand. I told her I was there for a colonoscopy and she said, “Wait! What?” I repeated myself and she said, “No, we have you down for two tests. I better check.” Not wanting to prolong this any further, I said, “Look, my doctor told me to come here. I assumed it was for a colonoscopy, but if there’s another test, so be it. I didn’t freaking ask.”

So, I learned I was not only having a colonoscopy, but also an EGD (Upper Endoscopy for Diagnosing Heartburn and Reflux) – basically a camera stuffed down my throat and another one up my ass.

They finally took me to the real room and I met the doctor (nice guy). They put me to sleep and that was that.

I woke up back in the prep ward (or whatever it’s called). When I had my shit together, another nurse unhooked me and asked me to get dressed. So, I did.

They took me to another room and called Carl in (after I signed a HIPA statement that it was okay if the doctor discussed their finding in front of him – hell, I don’t care).

They found several polyps in the colonoscopy and removed them for testing. But, I never knew anyone who had a colonoscopy where they didn’t find polyps and, since they were all small (2-3 mm) and seemingly benign, I wasn’t worried.

The EGD, though, had a diagnosis of GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease). So, I got a script for some blood work, one for Prilosec and he wanted an abdominal ultrasound. I told him I just had one done in December at Saint Mary’s Mercy in Livonia (when this all started).

So, Carl and I went to his office and waited some more until I could sign the release for my medical records.

We finally left Tri-County after almost five hours! Thanks, Carl, for putting up with that. I owe you one!!!

On the way back home, Carl asked if I was hungry. I told him I really wasn’t. He told me he’d take me anywhere I wanted. I said, “No, I’m good.” Then he said he knew a place where they made good soup. So, I started to get hungry!

We went to downtown Mount Clemens to Chantrell’s Jail House Deli. Interesting place!

They had several soups of the day, but we both got a cup of the scalloped potatoes and ham soup (it sounded interesting). Carl got half a turkey sandwich, while I got half of roast beef (swirled rye bread, spicy mustard and Swiss – no lettuce or tomato). I forgot to mention I can’t have any roughage for a week, so no nuts, whole wheat bread and especially lettuce!

We got it to go and he wouldn’t let me pay. Even short, old pasty white guys can be annoying at checkout!!!

Back at his house, he made some coffee and then we ate out lunch. It was excellent! I gotta find a recipe for that soup!!!

I waited about an hour to make sure the anesthesia had worn off, then I headed home.

I was driving on Groesbeck around 12 Mile when it started to snow and it snowed all the rest of the way home. Fortunately, it was warm, so the snow melted on the roadway. But, it was hard to see...

Once I got home, I retrieved the mail, treated the cat, changed clothes and took a nap.

Sidebar: I completely forgot I was supposed to call Carl to let him know I made it okay. Damn!!!

He called me about 7:00 p.m. and I apologized. I also thanked him again for taking me and his patience. I hope he knows I meant it.

I wanted something bland for dinner, so I made a blue box of mac & cheese. I ate most of it, but saved some for a crazy idea I have.

I didn’t even turn on the TV, but just read until about 9:30 p.m. when I went to bed.

Long day…

A Shitty Day

It was another dreary day on Wednesday.

I have to have yet another damn medical test on Thursday, so I could only have liquids to eat today.

Sidebar: Well, I could have jello, but I don't like jello. Reminds me of Bill Cosby...

So, I took in a box of chicken stock and a book to work.

At lunch, I warmed up cups of stock and drank that while reading my book.

Sidebar: I was hoping it would taste like chicken noodle soup, but it didn't  It was too bland. But, when I added some salt, it wasn't bad.

When I got home after work, I mixed up and drank the poop soup they prescribed.

Then I spent the rest of the night in the bathroom...

The Tuesday Tale...

Since I went to bed so early Monday night, I woke up bright-eyed and bushy tailed on Tuesday at 4:00 a.m. I finally got up after giving up all pretense of going back to sleep. I made an egg sandwich (with cheese, please) for breakfast, got ready and hauled the trashcan out to the road. I got to work about 7:15 a.m.

It was a windy day, with spitting snow and very gloomy.

I went up to Farmington (the town) at lunch (Farmington Road and 10 mile?) and dropped in at my optometrist. I don't have an appointment (rescheduled until February 6th). But I was hoping to buy another set of frames. I am wearing, like, eight year old glasses and they are giving me a headache everyday. My latest lenses are still intact, it's just the frame that broke.

They took down my information. I offered to pay for the new frames, but they insisted on trying to see if they were covered under warranty. This is the second time the same frames broke in the same damn place!

I headed south again and stopped into the Jimmy John's. I got the #4 Turkey Tom sandwich, with additional cheese and a pickle.

I ate most of it for lunch.

Sidebar: I offered Courtney half my pickle, but she said she was too full. So, I threw it away.

I knew Victoria had taken the day off to take Yanessa to a doctor's appointment. But, she did let me know Monday night she might be bringing her into work for a visit.

And, she did! At first, Vicky kept asking her if she wanted to give Papa John a hug, but you know how shy two year old's can be. Courtney gave her some candy and, when everyone else was talking about something else, I helped her unwrap it.

Then she gave me the sweetest hug, ever!

Sidebar: This was my second hug of the day. The first was from Riley, a big thug of a technician, who tries to embarrass me. Fnck that! You want a hug, dude, I got one for you!!!

So, I got two hugs today. maybe I'm the 'Hug Whisperer?"

Sidebar: I'd rather be the "Booty Whisperer" but, oh well...

The afternoon passed slowly as they always do.

Finally, I made my way home, hauled in the trashcan and buttoned everything up for the night.

I watched the news until 7:00 p.m. and the warmed up some shrimp scampi. The microwave (Chef Mike) overcooks the shrimp, but it still tasted great.

I watched two reruns of both NCIS and NCIS New Orleans and then went to bed.

Monday already???

It was warm again on Monday morning. I'm guessing this is our shortened version of the January thaw. I'll take it!

I went to Ten Yen and got the chicken sub gum, won ton soup and hot tea. I couldn't eat it all, but it was delicious.

It was still sunny and warm, so I walked outside in the afternoon. First time in a long time.

Back home after work, I watched the news until 7:00 p.m. Then I took off the shells and tails of the shrimp. I made it into shrimp scampi over linguine.

Sidebar: I make this so much I could do it in my sleep. But, I thought I'd kick it up a notch. So, I searched through recipes to see if there was something I'd missed.

I found an Ina Garten recipe that used a LOT more lemon juice and even lemon zest than I do. But, no shallots! WTF?

So, I went with the extra lemon, but used the shallots anyway. No shallots just seemed wrong...

Sidebar: This gave me a chance to use both my lemon squeezer and my new grater. They both worked perfectly!!! Thanks, guys!

I assembled my food, topped it with grated Parmesan and ate a fantastic dinner!

I debated on various shows, ended up taping one but went to bed at 9:00 p.m. instead.

Slow Sunday

I was beat on Sunday. So, I did the usual Sunday morning chores, including laundry, but little else.

I had to drop off a prescription at CVS, so I got some milk there. That way I didn't have to go and do the massive grocery shopping at Kroger's.

I did get the truck washed before coming home. I don't have a "good" car wash around here, but at least I got the salt off it.

I left the truck outside to dry in the sun.

Inside, I got the bike key and fired the Big Thumper up. I let it run for a good ten minutes.

I put the battery tender back on the bike and pulled the truck inside. I refilled the feeders out back and then buttoned everything up for the night.

I warmed up Evy's dish for dinner (though I had some shrimp thawing). It was delicious. I was totally thrown by the wrapped pork. I assumed it would be some kind of shredded pork filling. But it was a solid chunk of pork!

I saw my daughter Melissa had called, so I called her back. We talked for a long time (but it's been a while).

I watched "The song of the thin man" on TCM and then went to bed.

Sunday, January 24, 2016

I woke up late on Saturday, after spending a night having nightmares that woke me up, over and over... Most involved being in the hospital after smashing my bike up, back in the day. I have no idea why my brain went there...

But there was something definitely scary about being told you were going to have to have your leg amputated. So, I guess my subconscious focused on that... Hospitals = scary.

Thanks, Carl.

So, I missed my massage. And, I really needed that.

I shaved and showered. I decided to go grocery shopping on Sunday and devote the day to the latest project: Getting the wood scraps in the garage cleaned up. It's a mess out there!

So, I pulled the truck outside. I clamped a stop on the chop saw, set at 16 inches. Then I ran every damn bit of scrap wood through it. If I can figure out how to haul it, I'll give it all to my brother Carl for his fireplace.

I quit about 6:00 p.m. I completely forgot about Evy's supper, but I was starving (no breakfast or lunch) so I grabbed a can of Hormel chili and warmed that up. I ate it with some plain old saltine crackers, watching the news.

Then I took a nap.

I woke up in time to watch the 11:00 p.m. news and then Saturday Night Live.It was hosted by Ronda Rousey (one of my heroes) and it was just okay. I think they could have giving her a lot more lines/time, but, oh well...

Then I went to bed, hoping I wouldn't replay that hospital shit. Except for Mary. I almost forgot about Mary. God, that lady had a perfect body...

Birthday Shoutout!

To my dear brother Carl. Everything I know about being a crip, I learned from you!!! Love you, man! Stay healthy.

One of my favorite depressing songs...

Freaky Friday

Sidebar: I know you were expecting "Finally Friday" but I fear I've overworked that one...

It was marginally warmer on Friday, so I wore my jacket to work, I love the look of the pea coat but its heavy as hell. Plus there's something wrong with the pocket angle and, when I get in the truck, all my change falls out. I probably have ten dollars in coins somewhere under my seat... But, its too cold to look.

On the way into work, I stopped at the Looney bakery and got a dozen mixed bagels, a tub of cream cheese and three salt bagels in a separate bag.

Vicky brought me in some dinner from her mother, Evy. She said it was called "pasteles con arrozy gandules." She said it was pork. It looked like a enchilada on top of rice. She also said you had to top it with ketchup. Seriously? Ketchup is a Puerto Rican condiment???

She took me to lunch as well. I don't like that. My Mother always said a gentlemen paid for a lady. But, you try arguing with a Puerto Rican woman!

She wanted a burger, so we went to Red Robin.  She got some kind of burger with avocado (yuck) and I got the Blue Ribbon burger (Yum!)

We argued about the bill but, in the end, I gave in.

Seriously, between her and Carla, I have learned that short brown/black women can be INTENSE!

Back at work, I worked on a research project so the afternoon passed quickly.

Back home, I was working on my grocery list when the house phone rang. I glanced at it (normally I ignore it) and it was my brother Carl. WTF??? So, I picked it up.

Sidebar: DO NOT CALL THE HOUSE PHONE. I only keep it for the robocalls and to have a 911 address. I ignore it and any messages. Call my cell, please.

He offered to call me back on the cell phone after I castigated him. I told him that was stupid
 and we chatted.

I wasn't that hungry, so I watched TV and ate some Goldfish.

My brother Jim called (on the cell phone, thank you) and we talked for a bit.

Then I went to bed.

It's going to snow in D.C... That takes priority over ANY ISIS or terrorist threat we face!! Get your shovels ready!!! Empty the grocery shelves!!!

We are still laughing in Michigan.

Resting my knees

I woke up on Thursday all crippled up, with only one thought in my mind. Why the hell didn't I kneel on a pillow?

It was a little warmer, so I left my gloves at home.

There were off and on snow flurries all day.

When I drove to lunch at Applebee's, I turned at Newburgh and Warren. While I waited at the light, I watched a crane take down the Max & Erma's sign from the building. Sigh...

Now Applebee's has a lunch special with two lists of choices of soup, salad or entree. You get to pick two. One list costs you $6.99 and the other $8.99. But, you can pick one from each for $7.99. So, that's what I did. I got the French onion soup (my favorite) from the expensive list and tried the three cheese chicken and penne pasta from the less expensive list.

The soup was excellent, as always.

Sidebar: Is there any way to eat French onion soup gracefully in public? NO!

But the pasta was a delicious surprise! It was fantastic!!!

I was super busy all afternoon, so it passed quickly.

Back home, I found the bedroom door open (it does that sometimes when it's cold) and that Caley had barfed on the bedspread. Dammit!

So, I cleaned up the mess, treated it with Shout and threw it in the washer. I tried to throw Caley in there, too, but she ran away.

I went out back and refilled the feeders. But I was out of suet, so my little woodpecker friend was out of luck.

I had been crippled up all day so I took the night off.

I ate the last of the tuna and peas for dinner.

My friend B___ called and we talked for a long time (it's been a while). We caught each other up on personal stuff and then mostly talked about politics. That was depressing...

After that, I tried to get interested in a movie, but fell asleep before 9:00 p.m.

Thursday, January 21, 2016

Well, Wednesday...

Wednesday morning felt almost (almost) warm on the way to work! It wasn't, of course, (our high was only 21 degrees) but I think it was the lack of wind.

It snowed a little in the morning, though, and did feel cold again at noon.

I went to lunch at the Big Boy and got my favorite: Veal Parmesan with a Caesar side salad. My favorite waitress didn't wait on me, but she did stop by to chat.

Back home after work, I changed clothes and got started on my latest project. I am replacing nine worn tiles in the middle of the kitchen floor. This involved using the heat gun to warm the tiles (and the glue holding them down) and then prying them up with a six-inch joint knife.

It was a sticky hot mess and I had to do it all on my poor knees. I got them all off and in the trash by 7:30 p.m., but I was beat. So, I covered the sticky sub floor with visqueen for the night.

I made tuna and peas for dinner. But, I used my brother's method and served it over toast. I was too damn tired to make my wide egg noodles.

Sidebar: I don't know how Vicky does it: work all day and then work half the night on her houses. It might just be the difference between being 34 years old versus being 67!

By the time dinner was ready, the Red Wings game was in progress. So, I watched it to the bitter end (we lost 2-1) and went to bed at 10:30.

Wednesday, January 20, 2016

Tuesday was cold again when I woke up. 9 degrees. But the winds were lighter so it didn't feel as bad as Monday and there was no snow today. I took the trash out to the road, dressed like an Eskimo.

Sidebar: I have been noticing the temps in my daughter Amy's Minnesota and realize I'm just whining. It's January in Michigan. What do I expect?

I needed to go to Lowe's at lunch, so I stopped into the Newburgh Grill again. This time I got a cup (that bowl was crazy big) of split pea soup and a mini Greek salad.

Sidebar: They seem to have replaced my favorite Tuesday bean and ham with this split pea. Why? I dunno...

Then I went to Lowe's and picked up a cheap heat gun. Now, I have an expensive heat gun I bought when I redid the floor in the kitchen. But, I can't find it in the garage...

After work, I retrieved the trash can and the mail and then went inside for the night.

I unpacked the heat gun, but then went and watched the news.

I would have got to work on my project at 7:00 p.m. but the State of the State was on. So, I watched it instead. I wanted to see how Governor Synder handled the Flint water crisis. I thought he did pretty good.

I made a bologna sandwich and ate it with some stale potato chips for dinner. I forgot the damn pickle again!

I watched both NCIS shows and went to bed at 10:00 p.m.

Interesting Concept

Monday Moanin'

I woke up to a very cold Michigan Monday. I shut off the alarm and thought it might be a good idea to grab five more minutes of sleep. NOT!

So, I had to hustle to get to work on time.

Courtney had to take the day off (her day care closes on MLK day), so it was quiet.

Michelle showed up, so she went to lunch with Vicky and me. We were supposed to go to Max & Erma's (the ladies wanted salads). But, it was closed!

Sidebar: A restaurant that closes on MLK?

So we went to the Newburgh Grill. They got their salads but I settled for a big bowl of beef vegetable soup.

It started snowing in the afternoon. That's all the day needed!

When I got home after work, I was watching the news (of course). That's when I saw that Max & Erma's closed some 16 stores in Michigan, overnight, with no notice to employees! They left four or five open, but none near me.

I'm gonna miss that Southern Fried Chicken Salad with warm honey mustard dressing...

I was still chilled, so I just heated up a can of Campbell's chicken noodle soup for dinner.

I watched taped shows until 10:00 p.m. and then went to bed.
