Sunday, Labor Day

I set the alarm for 5:30 a.m. on Sunday. Here’s why:

I asked Vicky if her uncle from Baltimore was back. She said he’d be back this Saturday, why? I told her I needed somebody to dig out those damn railroad ties or whatever they are. I got one out and trashed my back for a week.

I said I’d give him a $100.00 and he could split it with her Uncle Jose (my personal favorite Puerto Rican wrecking crew) if he wanted to. She said he was coming up with his son, so Jose wasn’t necessary.

Then she said that she, Evy and Yanessa would probably tag along, so Yanessa could swing on my swings. Yikes!

So, what was supposed to be a guy’s outside thing (I bought them a six pack of beer) was now women in the house. So, I thought I better clean it.

And clean it I did! Dusting, polishing, vacuuming, and getting cat hair off the furniture, washing the kitchen and bathroom floors and so on. I even washed down the kitchen cabinet doors (they needed it).

I started some bean and ham soup at 8:00 a.m. (I figured I needed to give them lunch). Then I went back to cleaning. I finally shaved and showered at 11:00 a.m.

But, still no text on their estimated arrival time. I finally gave in and sent a text at 1:30 p.m. She immediately responded with an apology, saying he got hung up in Baltimore and won’t be in until next weekend.

I told her not to worry, there was no rush on the project. Then I went out back and refilled the squirrel and bird feeders. I had a bowl of soup for lunch. Then I took a well-deserved nap.

When I woke up, I thought I should get some work done on the project anyway. So I started drilling two holes in each landscape timber, 18 inches from each end. I got six timbers done before my back started hurting. So, I stopped there.

I returned two calls, one from my daughter Melissa and one from my friend B___. Dave and Melissa are building a 24 x 30 foot garage on the concrete pad left from the storage shed they tore down.

B___’s doing the same thing as I am, preparing for winter. But, in addition to his gardens, he also has to winterize the boat and motor home! Then again, he’s retired and has a lot more time than I do.

I warmed up some of the pulled pork and had another sandwich for dinner (no chips this time, so I ate two pickles).

Then I started the newest season of Hercule Poirot on Netflix, but I fell asleep before the end.

  1. Well at least you got all the inside house stuff done and was able to chat on the phone for a while. Sounds like a great day to me, but you didn't nail it!
