Rainy Days and Saturdays...

I woke up early again on Saturday and noticed it was raining. It was not a thunderstorm or a hard rain, but steady.

And, it was still raining, hours later, when I left for my massage. I explained to Margaret how I injured my shoulder and she spent an extended time working on it.

She said nothing felt broken or snapped, but all my muscles and tendons were hard as rocks. At one point, she put her full weight (not much – she’s little) on her elbow in the junction of my shoulder and body and slowly moved my arm with her other hand. It was painful, but by the time the session was over, it felt much better!

I had taken over my bulb auger in case she needed it, but she said she had finished planting her tulips and daffodils.

Tulips??? I completely forgot them!!!

From there I went and got my hair cut.

Next came Kroger’s and this week’s shopping. I have a serious jones about roasting a chicken on Sunday and decided to turn the hard-ass garlic bread into a savory bread pudding. So, I got what I needed.

Then I popped into Home Depot (still thinking about tulips) and bought a bag of pastels tulip bulbs.

I got home just before noon and by then the rain had stopped. By the time I had unloaded the truck and put everything away, it was almost 1:00 p.m.

I changed clothes and then went outside to plant the tulips. I opened the shed and got the shovel, the rake and the wheel barrow.

I took them out front and raked off the mulch in the old tree garden. Then I tried to dig down six inches. The ground was so hard in spite of the rain (we are close to five inches below normal this year), I had to get the crowbar to break it up before I could shovel it out.

Sidebar: we are going back to the 30’s for our overnight lows here. The apparently not-hardy mums are already dying and the hanging plants are looking ragged.

So, I threw the compacted soil into the lot next door. I pulled the mums out of the planter and dumped half of that magic planting mix into the hole.

I placed the tulips bulbs in with the correct spacing and then covered them up with the rest of the dirt. I watered the piss out of them and then raked the mulch back.

I took down the hanging plants and put them in the wheelbarrow as well. I threw the plastic hanging pots in the trash.

Then I took the wheelbarrow out back and dumped the contents on the compost pile.

I put everything away, locked the shed and went inside for the rest of the day.

Sidebar: I think (I think…) I have everything squared away for the winter.

I went and took a long nap to reset my internal clock. This falling asleep early and then waking up at 3:00 a.m. is ridiculous.

When I woke up, it was raining again. I warmed up the rest of the sausage, sauerkraut and potatoes for dinner.

Note to self: You had way too many potatoes left and they went in the garbage. Next time, make less.

I watched movie, then the 11:00 p.m. news. I watched a rerun of Saturday Night Live and then went to bed.

  2. Except for bulbs, about two months ago.

  3. Great idea about the bread pudding. Perhaps a non-Thanksgivingy herb preparation would be better.
