It was warm and sunny on Thursday morning. It was supposed to get hot today (82 degrees F.?)
Before I left, I forgot two important things: Vicky’s “dinner”
container (I washed it last night and had it set out) and to turn the thermostat
to A/C. Dammit!
I walked outside in the morning and it was beautiful! I really
didn’t want to go back inside.
I went to Newburgh Grill for lunch and got the #5 special: a
cup of beef vegetable soup and a mini-Greek salad. Both were excellent.
Then I went to Kohl’s. I had a coupon (starting today) with
both $30.00 “Kohl’s bucks” and 20% off my next purchase. So, I bought five
lightweight golf shirts for Puerto Rico (I don’t really have any clothes geared
for the tropics).
Then I went back to work.
I got the new latches and the butterfly hinges for the old
uppers (I had them shipped to work rather than take a chance on them
disappearing from my porch).
I had planned on saving the hardware. Nicole Curtis (the “Rehab
Addict” on HGTV) said to put them in your crockpot in water on low for an hour and all
the gunk would come off. But, she didn’t mention four or five layers of paint (probably
lead) and she never mentioned if you could use your crockpot afterwards.
But three of them were broken. And, when you got the paint
off, they were chrome. The kid wants gold hardware. So, I went on the hunt. I
found them at Home Depot (the Martha Stewart collection, online only) but they
were solid brass and cost, like, $13.00 each!
Sidebar: She wants to flip the house, not “restore” it, so
that was crazy.
I finally found a plated reproduction at House of Antique
Hardware for, like, $3.50 each. So, I ordered them and the butterfly hinges. I
showed her the old, versus the new, and she was pleased.
I walked outside in the afternoon, but it wasn’t as pleasant
as the morning. It was HOT!
The first thing I did after getting home was to turn the A/C
on (I was going to do that in the morning, but forgot). It was 77 degrees in
the house when I got there. Then I treated Caley and changed into shorts and a
t-shirt.
I skipped watching the news and headed out back. I got the
tractor out of the shed and cut the back lawn. My next door neighbor, Rick, is
having his father’s wake this Saturday and I don’t want to embarrass him (or
me).
Speaking of Rick, he called me over to the fence and said he
had some left over 4x4’s from one of his construction jobs. He gave most of them
to a buddy. But he still had eight of them and asked if I wanted them. I said,
sure!
Sidebar: Where the hell am I gonna put eight 8-foot 4x4’s?
When I got done cutting the lawn, I put the tractor away,
locked the shed and then got the line trimmer out. I trimmed the whole back yard
(not an easy task and something I only do a few times each year).
I got inside at 8:30 p.m. I was hungry and beat. So, I made
myself another liverwurst sandwich and ate that, trying to get interested in
some TV. I couldn’t find anything interesting, so I went to bed.
Glad you were able to take care of your yard! You can give the wood to Jake :)

ReplyDelete@ Carla: No, he'll just make them into another incredibly heavy crate for something!
ReplyDelete@ GPF: Nope! You'll just cut them up and burn them next winter.
Ask if he has any angle brackets.

ReplyDeleteLinen is your friend, as well as shirts like Columbia's PFG (Performance Fishing Gear).
I'll have to check them out!
