Valentine’s Day

I didn’t set the alarm on Saturday, figuring I’d wake up at the usual 5:30 a.m. But, I woke up after 7:30 a.m.! It was snowing and I didn’t know what the road conditions were, so I hustled. I had a 9:00 a.m. massage appointment at Margaret's house.

The roads were crappy and I kept it in four-wheel drive (and slow) all the way. There was a car directly in front of her house, so I found a nearby parking spot. I got out and locked the truck and started walking. Margaret was outside and yelled at me to park in her driveway. So, I got back in and moved the truck.

Once inside, she explained that she had spent an hour shoveling the driveway and sidewalk and then salting them so I’d have a place to park. Who knew?

I disrobed and we got onto the massage. My back has been killing me (I thought it was the cold) and she beat the hell out of me. She thought it was my left hip. Huh?

We talked about her 80-year old dad, who was asleep in the recliner in the living room and had just gotten a knee replacement. I asked about that damn machine that flexes your leg (I had one in the hospital and then one at home both times). She said his doctor doesn’t believe in them! Huh?

I left there about 10:15 a.m. It was still snowing (we got about 1 – 1 1/2 inches here) and driving was treacherous.  Now, my plan (I always have a plan) was to go grocery shopping, drop the stuff off at home and then make the appointment at the dealership to get my truck serviced at 11:30 a.m..

But, with the traffic conditions, I didn’t think I’d make it. So, since I’d missed breakfast (and even my morning coffee) I went to Leda’s Coney Island. I got my usual and they remembered to put the over easy eggs on top the house-made corned beef hash. I broke my rule (been doing that recently) and ordered coffee. I was freakin’ cold!!!

Breakfast was delicious. I over-tipped the waitress (she never let my coffee cup get empty) and then I went back out into the weather.

At this point, I couldn’t tell if it was still snowing or just the wind picking up the light snow and blowing it around.

Sidebar: I used the skills acquired from my sailing days in my 20’s (assuming they are true in winter as well as summer). If a flag is extended straight out, it’s a 20 mph wind. We definitely had at least a 20 mph wind!

Then I drove to the dealership. I was 15 minutes early, but since I was the only one there, they said it was no problem. They did the routine service and inspection, but came and told me my wiper blades were streaking. I knew that, but I thought it was just the salt. So, I had them replaced. I was out of there in less than a half hour, with a freshly washed truck.

On the way back, every time I had to use the windshield washers (and it was a lot), I marveled at how clear the windshield got.

From there I went to Kroger’s and did my shopping. I had noticed in their flyer that they had bone-in pork chops on sale (I’ve been jonesing about a fried pork chop, pan sauce and mashed potatoes for my Sunday supper) but couldn’t find any. So, I asked. Turned out the truck was late because of the snow. Damn!

Oh, and when I went out to load up the groceries, I realized you couldn't tell the truck had ever been washed. Sigh...

I was back home with the groceries put away just before 2:00 p.m. I went out back and refilled the feeders and the suet cage, even though nothing was moving, just the wind and snow.

Back inside, I changed clothes. Now, what you don’t know is that, when I come home and change clothes, that’s when Caley is the most animated. She’s probably just lonely and bored, but she jumps on the bed, tried to hit me, grabs my belt as I take it off and so on. So, this time I reached down and turned on the toy that Whiskey bought her. I’ve been trying to get her to play with it off and on since it first came – no dice.

And dammed if she didn’t jump down and start batting it around! I stared at her in amazement for a few minutes and then went to grab my phone or camera to take a video for Jake and Carla, but that broke the spell and she quit.

So, next time, I’ll set it up and have the camera on hand first.

I was bushed and my back hurt, so I decided to take a nap. I laid down but couldn’t fall asleep. After 30 minutes, I was p*ssed, so I got back up and went into the living room, turned on the fireplace, sat in my chair and read, instead.

The scene out the front window was amazing. Sometimes the sun was shining, but a moment later, the winds were blowing the fresh snow around so much it was a white-out! The driveway would start to drift over but then it would be scoured clean by the wind.

I read until the news came on at 6:00 p.m. I shut down the living room and went and watched it.

When it was over, I warmed up more linguine with clams. I drizzled that with some extra virgin olive oil and topped it with grated Parmesan cheese. It was still delicious!

Diabetic Interesting Fact: a recent study found that eating reheated pasta leads to a much lower spike in blood sugar than eating just-cooked noodles. After reheating, the pasta becomes a resistant starch, meaning it releases less sugar and keeps you fuller longer.

I started watching the Red Wings game (I joined in progress), but fell asleep before it finished (it went into overtime and we lost). Nevertheless, it was good to see Jimmy Howard back.

  1. Is today the coldest day of the weekend or was Saturday?

  2. Whiskey is glad Caley enjoyed her toy!

  3. @ Jake: No, it's Sunday (today) . They moved the date on on us (must have been a shift in the jet steam or something).
@ Carla: Yeah, but I want you to to see it! I spent like a month or so trying to lure her to play with it. And now I want proof of it, dammit!!!
