I'm sure you do it more than you think. Say you're making a recipe and it serves eight people and you want to cut it in half. That's just substituting X for servings and Y for people. Let's pretend Z is cucumbers and is equal to 2. If X (servings) is now equal to 4 people then Z is 1 cucumber.
