Philosophical question: Why is it that “short weeks” always
seem to take longer that regular ones? Is it unrealistic expectations? Or, some
sort of time/space continuum thing?
Anyway, it was a perfect day weather-wise on Friday, although
chilly in the morning. I am part of the Detroit heat-sink phenomenon, of
course, so it was still 51 degrees F. here when I woke up. But, Port Huron and places
north of I-69 were in the 30’s!
I forgot to mention this, but I had a voicemail at home on
Thursday from the Wayne County Health Department, asking me to call them back.
So, I waited until after 9:00 a.m. and then called back the
number she left. It was regarding the animal bite incident report I had to
file, of course. After I verified I was who I said I was, she launched into a
rather lengthy diatribe on rabies and symptoms I should look for in Scruffy
within the 15 days after the bite event. I couldn’t help it, I started to
laugh.
She sternly reminded me this was serious. If I develop
rabies and let it go untreated, even for a short while, it could be fatal! I
told her I understood that and was not mocking her, but since this all happened
over a month ago, her information was a little late.
She explained they were short-staffed. I said, “Okay, I get
that. So, you are just checking a box someplace to show that somebody did call
me after the “incident?” She replied, “Well… yes, I guess you could look at it
that way…” I said, “As long as we understand each other…”
She finished her speech and then said there were some “optional”
questions she had to ask, but I didn’t have to answer. I said go ahead. She asked
me my race. I said Caucasian. She said, “Okay, are you Hispanic or Arabic?”
Whaat?
Anyway, I felt better afterwards, knowing Wayne County has my
back!
I had something I had to do after work, so I didn’t get home
until around 7:30 p.m. I watered the grass seed in the gathering gloom,
fighting with mosquitoes. I had leftovers for dinner and watched a movie on
Netflix. I went to bed just after 10:00 after watching Scruffy for a while to
see if he was showing any signs of rabies. You can’t be too careful with that
sh*t!
