My New Watch

I don’t know if we ever talked about this, but I have fat wrists. I believe it comes from working construction and then in the factory for so many years in my youth. But, whatever the reason, a normal watchband is too tight.

Now years ago, I remedied that by using pocket watches. So, whenever my current Timex would bite into my wrist, I would thank about doing that. But, these days, I not only have my usual pocket stuff, but now a cell phone. So, adding to all that seemed silly.

But, I happened to see a watch for sale that was attached to a carabineer. You hook it to your belt. Problem solved!

Plus, it had all the numbers on the face (a personal pet peeve: I hate watch faces with dots or even diamonds that designate some or all of the hours), a second hand and the date (all of which are my requirements for a watch).

So, I bought it and it came yesterday. It was a bit unusual as it’s one of those linked by a radio signal to the atomic clock. So, to set it, I had to scroll through major cities to get one in my time zone first. Silly me, I thought Detroit would come up, so I blew by New York. However, Chicago came next. I ended up going all around the world by city. I almost gave up in Hong Kong, BTW.

Then, when I programmed that it, the watch took over! The second hand began to spin at an alarming rate! It looked like one of those old movie shots that indicated the passage of time. Now, it came set at 12:00 and it was already 8:30 p.m., so it took a while. But finally it stopped at the precise time.

I wore it to work today. I still glance at my wrist to see the time (a habit I will have to break) instead of reaching down and tipping it up. But, what’s neat is that when I am seated, I just have to look down at my lap to see the time.

I like it!

  1. Thanks! I suppose it makes me look a bit foppish wearing it, but I don't care. At least my wrist doesn't hurt!
