I was awakened early Sunday by the sound of thunder. I
checked and it was raining, with occasional flashes of lightning. I thought
about sitting on the front porch for a bit (as I used to when it rained) but
realized my security light would go on. Not wanting to be in the spotlight, I
went back to bed. I woke up for good at 5:00 AM. Since the cats weren’t around,
I stripped the bed and started the weekend wash. I got a cup of coffee and got to
work on the Blog entry.
Amy wished me a Happy Father’s Day on my Blog comments and
Jake and Carla called about 8:00 AM with the same wish. Thanks!
I needed some bacon for today’s dinner, so I baked a pound
of it. Since I had extra, and it was Father’s Day, I made myself two eggs
sunny-side up. I added toast and three strips of bacon. I put Blackberry jam on
the last half piece of toast and had a great breakfast! I shaved, showered and
got dressed. At 9:30 AM, I made a quick run to Home Depot for more sandpaper
and brad nails.
I got back just before 10:00 but just after a call from
B___. So, I returned his call and we caught each other up. I went out to the
garage to start on the shelves, when the phone rang again. This time it was
Jeremy. We exchanged Father’s Day wishes. He said Riese was taking him to a
movie and an Italian restaurant for Father’s Day, but he has to pay. I like the
way that girl thinks!
Then it was back in the garage. I opened the door, but it
was still overcast and gloomy. I hoped that the sun would break out and dry the
grass enough so I could cut it. All this rain has turned my lawn into a
pasture!
I was looking at my homemade shelves when it dawned on me: They
were not wide enough! I had ripped them to 8 inches and my shelf brackets are
for 10-inch boards! Damn!! Oh well, I can probably use them elsewhere when I remodel
the garage.
But, for today, I used the long level and set most of the
shelf brackets (I’m missing two). The pegboard behind the bench will mostly
have short gardening tools, but I figured I might have to repair equipment out
there, so I added some screwdrivers and an adjustable wrench. I also added two latecomers
to the tool rack. See photos.
I quit that project at 1:30 PM, when I could no longer lift
my right arm over my shoulder. Damn you, rotator cuff! The sun had been playing
peek-a-boo all morning, so I thought I’d cut the lawn (instead of taking a nap,
which was my first choice). But, first, I needed some lunch.
I admit, I’d been thinking about those pierogies ever since
I dismissed them yesterday. So, I dug them out and made them. Now, everybody
had their own preferred method of making them (B___, for example, fries them).
But, I learned by watching Sue Plesz, (my old neighbor from Palms Road and my
friend to this day) so I boil them, while sautéing onion slices. When they are
ready (they float), I drain them and add them to the frying pan. This gives
them a nice crunchy outside, and a soft inside that I like.
OH, SHIT! I got out the sour cream and it was past the expiration
date. Hey, who cares, right? However, when I opened it up, there was a funky
blue/green mold covering it! I made a panic trip to the party store and got
some more.
My Father’s Day lunch was fantastic.
I decided the nap was more important than the lawn, so I
went for it. When I woke up, I finally called Carla’s Mom back, She had called
while I was sleeping to wish me a Happy Father’s Day. But, I just got her
voicemail. I thanked her and wished her a blessed day.
Then I hustled. I got the front grass cut with the push
mower and then did the back yard edges. It was already 8:30 PM, so I decided
that the back yard tractor work would have to wait.
Back inside, with everything buttoned up, I decided that my
Father’s Day dinner would have to wait as well. I was bushed. So, I washed up,
lay on the bed and watched part of a taped show. I fell asleep before it ended…
Happy Father’s Day!
