Spacer Christmas in Detroit 2009
The auto companies got their asses kicked
and we were all invited to retire.
Oh you could refuse of course
but then you just got fired.

Fifteen percent unemployment
but that only counts those still on the dole
No mention of those who just had to give up
and watch their bodies separate from their soul.

Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas,
Merry Christmas to me!
I don’t dare spend the money
to buy my kids a tree...

They keep saying it’s gonna get better
as they lay off half the teachers…
they cut our basic services
and we rally round the preachers.

So, we eat their thinned-out soups
And never answer the phone
‘cause it’s the bank or the credit companies
calling in their loans.

Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas,
Merry Christmas to me!
I don’t dare spend the money
to buy my kids a tree...

So, all the Christmas presents
now come from the dollar store
And amongst friends we all agree
no presents, no more.

St. Nicholas, if you exist,
Please hear my prayer
Stop your sleigh at my place
give some toys to the kids who live here.

Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas,
Merry Christmas to me!
I don’t dare spend the money
to buy my kids a tree...
