Friday Follies

I woke up a little late on Friday, so I didn't eat breakfast. I just had a cup of coffee and my pills (I hoped I didn't puke).

I shaved, showered and got dressed for running errands. I left the house just after 9:00 a.m. It was chilly, but not cold enough for my current coats. I really need a nice, light jacket. I guess I'll check out golf jackets, like Jake suggested.

First stop was the Feed Store for 40 pounds of bird seed. I'm not going to start feeding them just yet, but thought I'd get it into the can before the weather really goes south.

Next stop was Westborn for more ham and rye bread.

Then I went to Home Depot. I could only afford two smoke/carbon monoxide detectors this trip ($89.00 for two!). I'll install the one in the bedroom to replace the one that failed and keep the other for when the office or downstairs one goes bad. I also bought a two foot by four foot sheet of 3/4 inch plywood that I had them cut in half. The reflecting pool cover I've used for years finally rotted out over the summer.

Finally, I went to Costco. I got a big bundle of paper towels, another big bundle of toilet paper and a 30-count box of Ensure. They only had vanilla, which I have not tasted yet. But both the chocolate and strawberry ones I have bought at CVS have an odd taste to them, so I guess it doesn't really matter.

I tossed the toilet paper and paper towel in the truck bed and headed for home.

I unloaded everything and treated the cat. I left the bird seed in the garage until I could get the wheelbarrow to take it out back.

It was 11:30 a.m., so I hopped in the truck and headed for "A little bit of soul" again. This time they were open!

I must say there were a few disappointments. It's not really a restaurant, it's more a take out and catering place. They did have five tables (four four-seat ones and one two-seat one). So, I told the woman taking my order that I would be eating in.

I ordered the catfish, red beans and rice and the mac & cheese. Second disappointment: She said the mac & cheese wouldn't be ready for an hour or so. This was one of the side dishes they had raved about on TV, so I was bummed.

My other choices were string beans (beans with beans and rice? I think not.), fried corn (never heard of that) or candied yams. I went with candied yams.

When she called my name, I went up and found my lunch in a Styrofoam takeout box, complete with a plastic bag that held a napkin, plastic knife and fork and a packet of salt and pepper. So, no photo of my lunch.

I asked her for a glass of water and she said they only sold bottled water. So, I bought a bottle.

They did give me a little container of hot sauce for the catfish. Speaking of which, the catfish was excellent!!!

Sidebar: I love catfish, breaded with cornmeal and topped with hot sauce. I used to make it at the house every now and then, until I realized I could still smell it weeks later, LOL!

The red beans and rice was bland, but I expected that. In terms of spicyness, soul food red beans and rice is the worst. Next comes Cajun red beans and rice (better). But the best I've ever had (and I've had a lot of it) is Puerto Rican beans and rice, with its mysterious sofrito seasoning.

Sidebar: I've never had it, but I have a lot of Mexican friends who swear by Mexican homemade red beans and rice. I'll have to try that one day.

I added a splash of hot sauce to the red beans and rice and that helped a little.

The candied yams were a poor choice; way too sweet for my taste. I should have ordered the fried corn, just to try it. So, all but two bites of the yams stayed in the container.

When I was done, I didn't see any trash container. So, I asked the lady behind the counter where I should put it. She said to just leave it on the table and she'd take care of it. I left her a two dollar tip, but I don't know why. It's not like she waited on me or anything.

Back home, I checked with Courtney Esper to see if she was back from Sam's Club yet. I am giving my old hunting coveralls to her husband Mike (he gets offers to go gun hunting, but doesn't have any camo).  Besides, they are insulated, so he could use them to shovel snow, etc.

Sidebar: It's big and bulky and takes up way too much room in my closet.

She was home, so I ran over there and dropped off the suit and a container of soup. She's not due to have her baby for another month or so, but has been having contractions (strong enough she's been at the hospital twice in the past week). So, we sat and chatted about work, about her new mini-van (they couldn't get three car seats in her old SUV) and about life in general.

I left and came back home. I treated the cat and then attempted to go up in the attic. With my weak right leg, I could only get up three steps. But, I'm tall enough I could reach up and put the three drawers I repainted for Vicky's flip house. I've never heard anything more about it and they've been sitting in the office for years.

I am determined to reclaim my office!!!

Amanda called around 3:30 p.m and asked what I was doing for dinner. I said I hadn't thought about it yet.

Sidebar: She's learning, LOL! She usually called between 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. and I have to tell her I already ate.

Anyway, she said she and Keldon would pick me up around 6:00 p.m. and they did. She suggested Archie's and said her Mom and Dad might be joining us and they did.

I ordered meatloaf, mashed potatoes and green beans off the Senior's menu (supposedly smaller portions). I went with their French onion soup as well.

What I got was three pieces of meatloaf smothered in gravy along with the sides. I ate all the potatoes and green beans, but barely made it through two pieces of meatloaf.

Sidebar: Amanda said I would love the potatoes, because they are real potatoes and hand mashed. They were excellent. He father said he didn't like their meatloaf, but it wasn't that bad.

Oh, Amanda got the pot roast, Keldon and her father both got fish with mac & cheese and her mother had a cheeseburger with onion rings.

After dinner, we went back to the house. Keldon needed to burn off some steam, so I challenged him to see how far he could throw the black walnuts into the field. He thought that was a great game (and I got some of them off my lawn, LOL!)

Amanda and I played porch monkeys until he got tired. Then they left.

Back inside, I had to treat the cat again. I tried to explain that I had not opened or closed the garage door, but apparently it now means any time I go outside. Sigh...

It was already 7:30 p.m. and I was bushed. So, I just watched TV until bedtime.
