Laid back Wednesday

It was still chilly Wednesday morning. And after two days of below temperatures and rain, it was a little foggy until about 10:00 a.m.

I ate a late breakfast of oatmeal with my morning pills.

I shaved, showered and got dressed in shorts and a t-shirt. It was supposed to get back up into the 80's today.

Sidebar: That will be the warmest it gets in the next 10 days! Fall seems to have come early this year.

I putzed around with household chores (doing a load of laundry, washing the bathroom floor, running the dishwasher, etc.)

I went outside to get  the mail around 3:00 p.m. It felt so nice to be warm again, I sat down on the porch bench for a bit. That "bit" turned out to be over two hours!!!

Sidebar: I kept thinking I should go trim more iris or something. But I didn't. I just sat there, enjoying what seems to be the last nice summer day.

Finally back inside, I warmed up my Red Lobster meal and ate that for dinner.

I watched the news and then a movie. Next, I watched the 11:00 p.m. news and the Tonight Show. Then I went to bed.

Congratulations!

Keep forgetting to mention this, but I got a text from Joe and Jerica on Monday. They are expecting another baby boy. His name will be James Connor Garcia and he is supposed to show up January 23, 2018! Again, congratulations!!!

Tuesday's Trials

It rained off and on Monday night into Tuesday. At times, the heavy thunder work me up.

I woke up on Tuesday at 6:30 a.m. with the alarm. I threw on some clothes and took the trash out to the road.

It wasn't raining when the mail came, so I went out, got it and dragged the trash can back inside.

I got a check in the mail and, since I was already dressed, I drove it down to my bank. I went to deposit it into the ATM. But, when I did, the ATM said it couldn't read the check and please take it back. BUT NOTHING CAME OUT!!!

Eventually, it did spit my debit card back out. But I was afraid if I left to go into the bank, it might cough up the signed check to the next person in line. So, I backed up (so I could open the doors), blocked the ATM (there are two) and went inside.

Sidebar: Bear in mind I had no plans in going into the bank or a store, so I had my ratty, ripped up pants and a t-shirt on.

I stopped at the first occupied desk and said, "I need somebody to open the ATM up so I can get my check back!" The lady said, "I'm sorry, but we don't service the ATM's!"

WTF?

She asked if I wanted the customer service number for the ATM company. I asked her if she would call for me instead. She said, "Sure, no problem."  Thus began about an hour long ordeal. At first she went through the usual "If you want blah, blah, blah, press one." She finally got through to a person, explained the situation and then gave them all my routing numbers.

The bank president came over and asked me to please move my truck. She came outside with me to make sure none of my information was still in the screen. It wasn't.

Back inside, the ATM folks wanted to speak to me. I had to verify everything in my life, practically. Finally, they agreed to put the money in my account until tomorrow, when they next serviced the ATM.

I drove home extremely annoyed.

I took a two-hour nap in the afternoon and woke up to the alarm clock, again. Then I shaved, showered and got dressed.

Amanda and Keldon showed up at 4:30 p.m. This was the rain check from Sunday's missed dinner.

We went to Red Lobster (just down the road). I had my usual (the half order of shrimp linguine Alfredo, a Caesar salad and biscuits), Amanda got the shrimp scampi, a salad and a baked potato and Keldon got popcorn shrimp.

I took most of my linguine home in a box.

They dropped me off around 6:00 p.m. So, I watched the news until 7:00 p.m. Then I did some work on the computer until 8:00 p.m and NCIS. I watched that until 9:00 p.m., the a DIY show until NCIS New Orleans came on. After that was over, I went to bed

Monday

I took Monday off.

I ate more fruit salad until I was sick of it. The rest went into the trash. I cleaned out the fridge as well for the Tuesday trash day.

I took a nap in the afternoon

I watched the movie "The Ghost and the Darkness" and then went to bed early.

The Sunday story

I ate fruit salad for breakfast.

I ate fruit salad for lunch.

I ate an afternoon snack of (what else) fruit salad.

Sunday night, this is what I had left (bear in mind I took my largest Tupperware bowl, filled with fruit salad, to Scott and Amanda's house on Saturday).

I was sick to death of fruit salad!!!

Amanda and I agreed to meet her Mother at the Elks Club for bingo. At the last minute, her Mother bailed on us. but her cousin was going to meet us there.

I knew it started at 6:00 p.m., so I shaved and showered at 5:00. I was drying off downstairs when I heard the doorbell ring and somebody pounding on the front door. I put on my robe and went upstairs. It was Amanda, who said when I didn't answer my phone, she was worried about me.

Sidebar: Why do people like Amanda or Vicky worry so much about  me?

I told her she seemed a bit early and invited her in. She sat on the couch, playing with Caley, while I got some clothes on.

Sidebar: She and Caley get along much better than Caley and I. I don't know why...

So, when I was dressed, we left. She introduced me to her cousin in the parking lot, but I didn't catch her name (was it Katie? I dunno...)

So, I called her babe or kid all night long, LOL.

None of us won a goddamn thing.

Now, Amanda and I decided to go to dinner afterwards. But we were both broke. I had five dollars on me and she had $11.00. So we went to the Baskin Robbins on Merriman, instead. I got a cup of pistachio ice cream (first time I've had that in years) and she got chocolate ice cream with almonds, topped with strawberries and whipped cream.

She dropped me off at home and we said our goodbyes on the porch. Then I went inside, undressed and went to bed.

Bonfire!

I woke up late on Saturday (my now usual routine). I had left two windows open so the house was freakin' cold! I warmed up two sausage biscuits for breakfast, but for some reason, they tasted like shit. I choked down one and threw the other away.

I shaved, showered and got dressed. Then I headed to Kroger's.

Now, I was invited to a bonfire at Amanda and Scott's house tonight. She was making ribs and corn. My only responsibility was to bring a fruit salad, Papst Blue Ribbon beer and some firewood.

So, I checked out recipes on Food Network and decided on a chef Robert Irvine one. It sounded simple, but good.

However, I spent a small fortune on the fruit!

I bought a small, seedless watermelon, a cantaloupe, white grapes, a pint of raspberries, a pint of blue berries, a quart of strawberries, a pineapple,  and three Granny Smith apples.

I couldn't find a 12 pack of Papst, so I ended up buying a 30 can box. I grabbed two bundles of wood as well. And, a jug of orange juice.

Back home, I started on the fruit salad.

Now, I have a big (BIG) bowl. But I realized this would not all fit.So, I diced up half of the watermelon (I saved the rest for Keldon, who loves watermelon). I also diced up half of the cantaloupe. Then I rinsed and added the raspberry, and blue berries. I cleaned off two cups of white grapes and added them as well. Then I peeled the pineapple, cored it and diced that up. I cut up two Granny Smith apples, drenched them with lemon juice so they would not brown up and put them in the bowl.

I gently folded them all together and added a cup of orange juice. I put as much as I could in my largest Tupperware bowl. Then I headed out about 5:30 p.m. They live in Dearborn, so it was about a 25 minute drive.

Amanda was getting her baby back ribs out of the oven and her corn out of the pot.

Sidebar: No offense, but who boils corn? My mother. But I didn't see a grill in their small back yard, so I guess I understand.

Anyway, the ribs were fantastic. I had half an ear of corn with butter and salt and some of that damn fruit salad. It was all delicious.

Scott started the bonfire and we all just chilled.

I did break down and had a beer. I left around 10:30 p.m. I was getting cold (should have worn a coat) and it was Keldon's bedtime. So, I got on the Southfield freeway and took it to I-96. I was home in no time.

I wasn't tired, so, I grabbed a DVD from my collection. It was "The long kiss goodnight" starring Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson. I think its his best work, BTW. When it finished, I went to bed.

Finally Friday

Friday was colder yet! Felt more like late October than the end of August.

I did go outside for a bit to pick up all the pine cones that the squirrel didn't eat. I put them in my fire pit.

I ate leftover mac and cheese for a combination lunch and dinner. That's almost as bad as sausage and sauerkraut.

About 9:00 p.m. I went out back and lit the pine cones on fire. Everybody on Facebook has been bragging about going camping and having bonfires. So, I had one of my own!

Note: This is some crappy photo. My phone doesn't do well when its dark.

When the fire burned down, I went back inside and watched TV until bedtime.

Thursday

Thursday was a little chillier than Wednesday, so I stayed inside. I didn't really do much. Just farted around. I made a blue box of mac and cheese for dinner. I couldn't take another night of sausage and sauerkraut!

I did a combination of reading and watching some TV until I got sleepy. Then I went to bed.

Wednesday

I woke up at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday. I skipped breakfast (wasn't that hungry) and had a cup of that horrible coffee while I watched the news.

I finally got off my ass and shaved, showered and got dressed. I got dressed in my long, ratty work pants and a t-shirt. It was nice and sunny at the time, but only in the 60's and windy. Perfect day for yard work!

But, first I ironed on another section of veneer edging to the toy box. That's the last of the actual toy box. Now all I need to do is the four sides of the lid. I managed to get up off the floor when I was done.

Sidebar: I have mastered this. I no longer get down on my hands and knees (which I had to in this case) unless I position a kitchen chair nearby. I use that to muscle my way back up since my legs no longer help that much.

I opened the front windows to air out the house (the downstairs one has been opened since the bleach incident). I turned on the air purifier in the bedroom so my allergies don't stuff up my nose tonight.

I unplugged the iron and went out back to the shed. I got out the wheel barrow and various tools and went up front.

First, I cut off the black walnut branches that were drooping on my fence from the neighbor's tree.

Sidebar: Not sure why black walnuts do that. When I could get up a ladder, I cut the branches on my tree some 30 feet in the air. Now one of then has drooped enough to nearly touch the truck when I pull in.

I had to smile. If you long time readers remember, I had a crew of kids who helped me in the yard. I paid them and told them to call me Papa John. They are probably in middle school, these days. Well today, another group of little kids on bikes kept going by and kept yelling, "Hello Papa John!"

I am apparently a legend (in my own mind) in the neighborhood.

So, I trimmed the bushes up front.
Then I started on trimming back the iris. But I only got the ones in front of the porch before my back started hurting.

I put everything away and went inside. I took a nice nap. Then I warmed up the sausage and sauerkraut for dinner. (I am getting sick of it, BTW.) Then I watched TV until the wee hours of the night.

Trash Day

I woke up to the alarm on Tuesday. I threw on my shorts, t-shirt and crocs. I gathered up the last of the trash and hauled the can out to the road. It was lightly sprinkling.

Back inside, I watched the news until 10:00 a.m. Then I shaved, showered and got dressed in my sorts and t-shirt (a new pair).

I ate the last of the sloppy joes for lunch.

I was doing a little light housekeeping when the phone rang. It was Amanda. She said the restaurant was dead (she had made a total of $13.00 in tips all day) so she was leaving early She wondered if she could stop by. I said sure.

So, she did. We played porch monkeys for about a half hour. Then she had to leave to pick up Keldon.

BTW, for the last three weeks they had picked up my trash by 7:30 a.m. Today it was still sitting there until about 4:30 p.m.

I went out back and checked the vegetable garden. I found two more small ripe tomatoes.

So, I ate two toasted tomato sandwiches for dinner.

I watched NCIS and NCIS New Orleans, then the news and the Tonight show. Then I went to bed.

Monday

I took Monday off.

I did water the outside containers. I put the hose in the reflecting pool for an hour (the Japanese maple looks a little stressed). I got the broom and dustpan back inside.

I did not watch the solar eclipse outside. I didn't have the glasses, or a welding helmet or take the time to make the pinhole box. So, I watched it on TV instead. Cool!

Sidebar: We had a partial eclipse back when I worked at DAS in the late 80's. We all went outside and looked at it without any eye protection. So, I'm not sure about all these dire warnings.

I ate sloppy joes for lunch and the sausage and sauerkraut for dinner.

But other than that, I didn't do a damn thing except read and watch some TV. It had been an exhausting weekend.

Soggy Sunday

I woke up late on Sunday.

Sidebar: I guess I have officially become a night owl.

I had some coffee and some scrambled eggs for breakfast. I filled in the Blog post and then ate my pills.

Sidebar: I really like eggs. They are very versatile. You can eat them in so many ways! For example, I love various kinds of deviled eggs, although I haven't made them in years.

I shaved, showered and got dressed in shorts and a t-shirt.

I stripped the bed to start the Sunday morning chores. The sheets and pillow cases went into the washer and I moved on.

I had watered the snake plant in the living room and was winding the mantle clock when I heard a weird noise. So, I finished up and went to investigate.

The wash machine was on it's first rinse and the downstairs drain had backed up and left a big puddle of black water and toilet paper!

Sidebar: This used to happen almost yearly, back in the day when Jake and Carla lived here. The sewer guys said it was roots, growing into the clay pipes from the house to the road. They offered to replace the pipes for $6,700.00. But, I paid to have the maple tree up to be front cut down, ($400.00) instead. This seemed to have solved the problem for the last four to five years. But, here we go again...

I carefully (I thought) stepped around the puddle and opened the window to let the smell out (I'll pay for the air conditioning costs. It's hot out but I want the smell gone.) I shut the washing machine off. I grabbed the jug of bleach and carefully (I thought) stepped back. It was when I was walking across the clean tiles when I noticed I was leaving foot prints.

So, I went into the downstairs bath and rinsed off the bottom of my Crocs. I dried them off on a rag and went back upstairs. I gave it a half hour and checked on the puddle. It was gone (thank God), so I swept up the gunk and put it in the trash.

I took the broom and dustpan out back and hosed them off. I left them on the patio chairs to dry out.

Back inside, I poured all of the bleach (about half a jug) on the puddle site and let it set to disinfect the site.

I went upstairs, put on some long pants and headed out to the little grocery store and Beech Daly and Joy Road. I bought two more jugs of cheap bleach.

Sidebar: I am of the opinion that higher-priced bleach, like Clorox, adds nothing but cost to bleach.

Back home, I changed into shorts again. I used a one quart all-purpose container (that I bought for painting) and hot water from the downstairs bath to rinse away the bleach. The water went down the drain easily.

Which left me with a puzzle: Was this just a hiccup or a total blockage? I needed to know because my summer sheets were still in the washer. So, I bit the bullet and turned the washer back on. Then I dumped another half jug of bleach back on the puddle site.

I went upstairs and read until I heard the washer spinning out on the second rinse. I went downstairs and watched. The drain did make some gluggling noises, but no water came back up! So, I rinsed off the bleach again (and the rinse water went back down) and dumped the rest of the jug of bleach on the site.

I decided not to call the sewer guys until this happens again.

When the washer stopped, I rinsed off the bleach and put my sheets in the dyer.

It was already 4:30 p.m. so I decided to  make my Sunday supper. I cubed enough Yukon Gold potatoes to cover the bottom of the Dutch oven pot. I topped that with a bag of Dearborn brand sauerkraut. Then I put in a sliced up ring of Hillshire smoked sausage. I brought that to a boil and turned it down to low.

I got the bedding out of the dryer and made the bed. I gratefully laid down on the sweet smelling sheets.

I got back up a while later and dished out my dinner. Delicious!

I watched TV until after Saturday Night Live. Then I switched to reading until 2:00 a.m. when I went to bed.

Road Trip!

As I said, I overslept on Sunday due to late night reading. So, I woke up at 8:30 a.m.! That normally wouldn't be a problem, but I was supposed to be picked up at 9:30. So, no Blog, no breakfast, just hustle, hustle, hustle.

I was drying off in the shower when I heard the phone ring in the bedroom (should have put it in my bathrobe pocket). Of course, by the time I got to it, Amanda had hung up. I tried to return her call, but just got her voice mail. I went back downstairs (with the phone, this time) to brush my teeth.

She called back to say she and her son were on the way. So, I got dressed and closed the bedroom door. Just as it clicked shut, the doorknob came off again. Now it's easy enough to put it back on if the door is open. But closed? All I managed to do was make the other end fall onto the bedroom floor!

The mechanism inside the door is square, so I figured all I needed was a wide blade flat head screw driver. But I couldn't find one!

Sidebar: My garage and back room are a mess (as regular readers would know) and I was rushing. It's out there, somewhere.

Finally, I had a brilliant idea. I took the doorknob off the linen closet door and used it to open the bedroom door.

Amanda showed up just then, so I left the doors open (please don't puke on the bed, Caley) to deal with later.

I climbed in the car, wished Keldon a happy birthday (he turned eight years old on Friday) and we headed out to Ann Arbor.

Twenty minutes later we we there and looking for the Natural History Museum on the University of Michigan campus.

Finding it was easy. Finding parking was not. We finally got a spot that said we needed a parking permit. So, Amanda went inside to get on while Keldon and I sat in the car, chatting. She finally came back, hung it on the mirror and we went inside.

It's a beautiful old building, BTW.

Admission was free, although they welcome donations.

The first floor was just the lobby and gift shop with a beautiful stairway up. Luckily, they had an elevator, albeit a freight elevator with pads on the inside walls.

The second floor (and biggest) was dedicated to dinosaurs and fossils.

The third floor was all about Michigan's animals, fish and birds, along with native Americans.

The fourth floor was the planetarium. We killed a little time on the third floor waiting for 12:30 p.m. and the next showing.

Sidebar: That was not free, but Amanda bought the tickets, so I don't know what it costs.

Finally, it was time and we filed in. I was used to planetariums at, say, Cranbrook. So this one was very small by comparison. It just had two curved, padded benches. But the show was very interesting, informative and entertaining. After the usual star show, there were two short films. One was about how a single meteor could have killed off the dinosaurs and the other about the inside of a black hole.

After that, we stopped at the gift shop, where Keldon bought a dinosaur with some of his birthday money. Then we left.

I was starving, so I suggested lunch. We went to a nearby Wendy's. I got the junior bacon cheeseburger and fries. Amanda got the junior bacon cheeseburger (no tomato) and the baked potato and Keldon got the kids cheeseburger, fries and some sort of a shake.

Then we headed home.

Amanda dropped Keldon off at her Dad's (they are going to a second birthday dinner tonight for those who couldn't make it on Friday night) and then me. We sat on the porch for a bit and relived the day's events. Then she left to run some errands and I went in to fix the doors. I put the linen closet door handle (rarely used) on the bedroom door and the worn out bedroom door on the linen closet.

Then I lay down (my legs were killing me). I fell asleep and had a nice nap.

When I woke up, I called my friend B___ to wish him a happy birthday and we talked for a while. Then I finally filled out the blog.

I heated up more of the sloppy joe mix and recreated Friday night's dinner for my supper.

I watched TV until it got boring and then went back to my book. I read until 1:30 a.m. Then I made myself got to bed.

Friday

Note: I apologize the the lateness of this post. I read a book late into the night, overslept and was in the shower when my ride called this morning to say she was on her way. So, I had to hustle just to have clothes on when they got here, much less writing the Blog post.

I woke up at 7:45 a.m. on Friday. I made a cup of horrible coffee and some oatmeal to eat with my pills.

Sidebar: I ran out of my preferred "Caribou" coffee. They stopped selling it in bulk at Costco a while back, so I joined Sam's Club. Now they don't sell it either! So, when I was at GFS, I bought a box of off-brand (called "Mosaic") that was advertised as having 100% compostable pods (a sore spot with most k-cup users).  It was 100% Colombian Arabica coffee. Now, I admit I am not a gourmet coffee drinker, but apparently, 100% Colombian Arabica coffee means "bitter as hell!"

I watched some of the morning news shows and then shaved, showered, dressed and got to work.

First I did the routine house chores (swept the kitchen and wood floors, vacuumed the rug, emptied the dishwasher, etc.). I may be retired, but I refuse to have a messy house, dammit! Then I got started back on the toy box.

I got the veneer edging on one side of the front facing edges. That's when I realized I was running out of the edging. I searched high and low, knowing (or maybe hoping) I'd bought two rolls. But, if I did, I couldn't find the second roll.

So, I changed into my "town" clothes and headed for Home Depot. I bought the second roll. It was after 12:30 p.m., so I bought a hot dog on the way out and ate it in the truck for my lunch.

Since I was out anyway, I headed to Kroger's to pick up some some things. I left there $29.00 poorer and went back home.

I treated Caley, changed back into my shorts and t-shirt and put away the few groceries. Then I went back to work on the toy box.

I finally finished the other side of the front facing edge (I told you this is a time consuming, labor intensive, precise process). I had the material to go on, but not the will. So, I took a nap instead.

I woke up near 6:00 p.m. I watched the news until I was hungry. So, I made dinner. I had thawed out a pound of ground chuck, so I browned that, drained the grease off and added a can of Manwich.

Sidebar: I know you can make a delicious sloppy joe yourself, but I didn't have the patience or time. Plus, Manwich tastes good to me.

I filled up one of the buns I had purchased earlier and plated it with pure Michigan: a McClure's pickle and Better Made potato chips.

It was excellent!!!

I couldn't find anything interesting on TV, so I shut it off. I read my book until I forced myself to put it down and turned the light off at 2:30 a.m.!

Sidebar: I am becoming my Mother! My Mother used to complain she couldn't stop reading because she wanted to see what came next and thus went late into the night. I guess the apple didn't fall far from the tree...

Breaking News!

They are starting emergency repairs on the Paint Creek Dam in Lake Orion. Authorities say there is no "immediate" danger the but original dam is starting to crumble and leak.

Thursday

It started raining here around 8:00 a.m. It wasn't hard and didn't last more than a couple hours. I checked the gauge and I only picked up a quarter inch. Sigh...

But, after lunch (another tomato sandwich), it started raining again. This time it was a little harder and lasted longer. When the sun came back out, I checked the gauge again and I had picked up a total of just over an inch! That's what I'm talking about!!!

I spent some of the afternoon on the toy box. I got the veneer edging put onto the back. That was the hardest part, due to the curves (it's hard to keep even heat with a flat iron on a curve). It was also the longest run of edging. Since you can only heat up about six inches at a time before you have to stop and rub it with a smooth block of wood, it takes time.

I ate the rest of the sweet corn and brats for dinner.

Caley and I spent a quiet evening on the bed. She slept while I watched TV. That is, until the Saturday Night Live special came on. When I started laughing, she got up in disgust and went into the living room.

I went to bed after the Tonight show.

Wednesday Woes

I woke up at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday. I had some instant oatmeal (trying to use up the box) and my pills for breakfast. Then I shaved, showered and got dressed for a 9:30 a.m. haircut.

It started to get steamy during my haircut. Michelle (my barber for years) noticed it first.

Sidebar: The barber shop uses a screen door before turning on the A/C.

So, I left the place with great hair, but sweating.

I drove to the Secretary of State's office on Wayne Road. It would have been closer to go to the super center on Farmington and Six Mile Road, but that place is a mad house.

Sidebar: I finally got the release of lien from Nissan Motor Acceptance Corporation for my paid-off truck. It said, in bold letters: Please note: In order to obtain a clear title, these documents must be taken to your local department of motor vehicles to complete the title transfer to you.

I waited over an hour (and that was just to get into the handicap seat). When I finally got my turn, the lady said, "Oh, honey, you don't need to have us do anything. Just staple the documents to your title and file it away."

WTF?

I drove back home, taking Hines Drive to Inkster to calm down.

I had to go to CVS so, on a whim, I popped in next door and got my usual order of chicken fried rice. Then I ran the truck through the touch-less car wash.

I left the truck outside in the sun, treated the cat and then dried the truck off.

I still left it outside while I went inside and ate lunch. Then I changed clothes and designed the last two jigs for the toy box.

I went in the garage, opened the door (it was hot in there) and cut out the pieces I needed. I screwed the one together and used the brad nailer to assemble the other.

For attaching the birch veneer edging

For sanding the lid
I cleaned up the mess, set the jigs aside, put the saw horses away and pulled the truck inside.

Once everything was buttoned up, I went inside and took a long nap.

I ate the rest of the chicken fried rice for dinner.

I watched TV but the nap did me in. I couldn't fall asleep until 1:30 a.m.

Tuesday

I woke up to the alarm on Tuesday. I threw on some clothes and got the trashcan out to the road before 7:00 a.m. The new trash company had changed the routes. Sure enough, when I checked at 7:30, my trashcan was empty.

So, I walked out in misty rain and brought it back in.Yes, it was actually raining (or misting) here for a change! Later on, it briefly really rained here. When the sun came out (around 10:30 a.m.), I checked the gauge. We only got about 1/4-inch of rain, but that's a lot more than we had.

I shaved, showered and got dressed. Then I left the house around 11:30 a.m. to go to Gordon's Food Service to get more lump charcoal. I wrestled that from the cart to the truck bed and headed back home.

I thought briefly about filling my truck up on the way back, but I still have over half a tank so I said screw it.

Sidebar: Gas prices keep inching up (probably due to Labor Day).

Back home, I wrestled the charcoal out of the truck and into the garage. I made it as far as Amanda's wheels and set it down. That bag is big, bulky and heavy for an old guy with a bad back!

I changed into shorts and a t-shirt (it was getting hot).

I called the dealership to get an appointment. The service department asked me to hold on while they checked if they had the parts in yet to make the repairs (huh?). I was on hold for over five minutes when they came back and asked for my phone number. They said they would call me back when they got an answer...

Sidebar: Why would you issue a recall but not send the replacement parts to the dealers?

I went out and watered all the container gardens. I found two more ripe tomatoes. So, back inside, I made them into a tomato sandwich for lunch.

I ate it on the bed watching TV. The bed felt good, so I took a nap.

When I woke up, I walked out to get the mail. Now, it was hot and muggy.

Back inside, I found that in just the short few minutes it took to get the mail, Caley had managed to barf on the bed sheets. Dammit! I just washed them on Sunday!! But, I stripped the bed and started the washer. I started the dishwasher as well.

I cut the kernels of sweetcorn off the cob (like I have seen Jake do) on two ears of corn, hoping that would make them taste less tough. I warmed them and a brat up for dinner in the microwave. It might have been just my imagination, but they did taste better.

I made up the bed, but left the dishwasher for another time.

I watched both NCIS shows, but still wasn't sleepy. So I watched the news and then the Tonight show before finally going to bed.

Sidebar: The dealership never called back. Sigh...

Monday, again...

I woke up at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, after a long night's sleep. I ate two Eggo waffles with warm maple syrup and my pills for breakfast. Then I got cleaned up and dressed.

It was warmer than Sunday, but cloudy and overcast.

I was lazy (although I got plenty of sleep) so I watched the Today show until noon, then the local news.

The only mail I got was a recall notice on the truck. It was for the air-bag activation switch. Seemed important, so I put it on the fridge to make an appointment to have it done.

Didn't feel like leftovers just yet, so I made some elbow macaroni and ate that with butter, parley flakes and lots of salt.

I watched the Tigers lose another game and went to bed (disgusted) just after 11:00 p.m.

Sunday

Well. I didn't make it to Office Depot at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, but I was there by 10:30. I bought a wired Logitech keyboard for $15.00.

Since I was that far anyway, I went up to Westborn and got eight ears of Michigan sweet corn for $1.99.

It was a perfect summer's day and I planned on grilling later.

Back home, I installed the new keyboard. Much, much better!

I did two loads of weekend wash while watching TV..

About 4:00 p.m., I started the charcoal. When it was ready, I grilled the sweetcorn.

Then I grilled the brats and a small steak I had in the freezer and thawed out.

I ate part of the steak, a brat and two ears of corn. I was a little disappointed in the corn. It was grilled perfectly, but was rather tough. I guess its getting near the end of the season.

I watched the news and then Pulp Fiction, just for fun. Then I went to bed.

Saturday

I around woke up around 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. I made some scrambled eggs for breakfast. Amanda and her son Keldon swung by around 10:30 a.m.. I'm riding with them to  Redford Comic Con at the Redford Aldersgate United Methodist Church.

Sidebar: I don't usually go in for that kind of stuff, but they were both excited and it was only $3.00 to get in. Plus, she insists I need to get out of the house more.

Three people were dressed as the ghost busters. There were people with Star War light sabers and so on. Interesting group of people, lol!

They dropped me back home just before noon. I went out and watered all the container gardens.

I picked four small red tomatoes!

I swept and vacuumed all the floors.

I went out to read on the patio, but the wind was too chilly, so I moved inside to the lift chair,

When I got hungry, I made a simple tomato sandwich (just bread, mayo, tomato, salt and pepper).

They have been threatening rain all afternoon but, once again, no rain here.

I watched an old John Wayne and then went back to reading until bedtime.

BTW, I hate this stupid keyboard. When Office Depot opens Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m., I'm going to go buy a regular one!!!

Sorry for the long delay

Nothing much happening around here except a bad keyboard.

Belated Birthday Shoutout

To my dear daughter, Carla on August 10. My keyboard crapped out on me and I had to get Jake's old weird one out of the attic.

Monday

It was cold again on Monday morning.

I ate cold pizza for breakfast and more for lunch.

They predicated occasional showers in the morning, but more numerous ones from 2:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m.

None of that happened here in Redford.

The landscape folks showed up to cut my dead grass.

I was sick of pizza, so I made a can of chili for dinner.

I read a book for a while and switched to forgettable TV until bedtime.

Slowhand Sunday

I woke up at 5:00 a.m. on Sunday and could not fall back asleep. It was chilly in the house and I was glad to get my buck-naked ass into my robe for a trip to the bathroom.

I went back to bed and read until the news came on. I watched that for a couple of hours until I got hungry. So, I made some instant oatmeal to eat with my pills.

Sidebar: I wish I could remember the recipe Carla uses to make regular oatmeal in the microwave. We were just chatting as she made it and I didn't write it down. It would be a hell of a lot cheaper and a lot less sugar.

I decided to take Sunday off.

** WARNING**

"Long-winded, occasionally ridiculous rant to follow."

Now, this goes back (at least in the bible) to when God was making the world. On the seventh day, he rested.

Now, in agrarian society, that made sense. Farmers work from dawn to dusk and they needed a break. So, they went to church and then took Sunday off. Other than my Mother, who was making roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy (God I miss that gravy) to feed an army.

But in today's digital world, nobody take a day off, even me who's supposedly retired.

So, I consciously became aware of what I was doing. Did I not check my email? Nope. Did I not respond to text messages? Nope. Did I not look at Facebook? Nope. Did I not watch TV? Nope.

But did I do it unconsciously and continuously, like I normally do? No. I did it deliberately.

People need some time to reflect, regroup and ponder.

**End of rant**

I took a long, nice nap in the afternoon. B___ called for the first time in a long time and we talked for a long time. He was surprised at my abrupt retirement, but had a lot of suggestions that I will take seriously.

I had a big meal planned, but decided not to go there (I was still pondering). So  I made a frozen pizza for dinner instead.

Then I watched TV until I fell asleep, still thinking of my Mother's gravy.

Sidebr: I used to pass on whatever dessert she made. Instead, I would butter two slices of white bread and dump the rest of her gravy on top and eat that for my dessert. No wonder why I am a Type 2 diabetic, LOL.

Saturday

I woke up at 6:30 a.m. in Saturday. It was 50 degrees outside, but still 71 degrees inside the house.

I watched the morning news shows under the covers and drinking hot coffee. I finally got up and made two Eggo waffles for breakfast.

Sidebar: Yes, I admit it, I bought more.

Then I shaved, showered and got dressed in working clothes (t-shirt but long crappy pants). I was waiting until it got 70 degrees outside. The day's project was to work in the garage, cleaning it up some, and I refused to do that wearing a coat.

I finally gave up waiting on the temperature and went out at 11:00 a.m.

Let me set the scene. When I am working on a project, it is my habit to just toss the wood scraps over the compound miter saw (it sits out away from the wall to allow me access to the shelves and tools). Over time, this creates a pile of wood pieces too small to use, but too big to throw in the trash. I like to cut them up and (eventually) give them to my brother Carl to use as kindling for his fire place.

Sidebar: There are NO "before" pictures. I am too ashamed at letting this go so long.

So, I pulled the truck out to the road, then moved Amanda's wheels and tires and the trash can. I got some empty boxes out of the attic and got to work.

I worked steady for a couple of hours (I told you I was ashamed) then my legs needed a break. So, I made another cup of coffee.

Sidebar: The last time I went to Sam's Club, they didn't have my favorite (Caribou). I am not sure if they just had a late delivery or if they dropped the brand like Costco did. Either way, I am down to seven k-cups left and have to do something...

I sat on the porch bench and watched the neighborhood kids play.

As the coffee ran out, I remembered something else I need to do. I had (hopefully) fixed the porch rocker for this year but the screws looked ugly. So, I went in the downstairs closet and (eventually) found a can of almond spray paint.

Sidebar: Not sure how old it was, but the cap broke apart while I was trying to get it off.

So, I sprayed the rocker, let it set 15 minutes and sprayed it again. I let it dry and set it back in place.
Now, Amanda has somewhere to put her purse when we play porch monkeys.

I finally got off my ass and went back to work. About two hours later, I finished up. I had two and a half boxes of kindling for Carl, sitting on 3/4-inch boards (my garage doesn't leak, but when I pull the truck in after a rainstorm, the water ponds.)

I swept up all the sawdust I could, then blew it out with the air compressor nozzle and finally used the leaf blower on it.

Sidebar:For some reason, the leaf blower works better than the air compressor.

I pulled the truck back in and gave up for the night.

Dinner was simple, but delicious. I had bought two beautiful bunches of beets, so I cut the tops of of them. I cut the greens and the stems into manageable sizes and steamed them. I added a splash of white vinegar and some salt and ate them all...

Fantastic!

I watched some forgettable TV until bedtime.

Finally Friday

I woke up at 7:45 a.m. on Friday (had a restless night's sleep). It was 78 degrees and overcast. I made scrambled eggs topped with ketchup (a childhood favorite) for breakfast.

I putzed around until 11:00 a.m., when I shaved, showered and got dressed.

Sidebar: They said there "might" be spotty showers but, of course, not here.

I needed to go grocery shopping. My plan was to go on a weekday and after lunch hour.

Sidebar: I know lots of women (including my daughter, Melissa) who go shopping on weekdays at lunch time to avoid going on the weekends).

So, I left at 1:00 p.m. I was surprised at how windy it had gotten. When I got to Kroger's, I was amazed! The parking lot was more packed than Saturday morning. WTF?

But, I was there, so I braved the crowds.

I missed one item on my list (kitchen trash bags) and walked away $84.00 poorer.

Back home, I left the truck outside to unload it. I treated the cat and put everything away. Then I put the truck away and buttoned everything up for the night. It still felt warm, so I changed into shorts and a t-shirt

The project for today was to try and fix my fishing reel. It got messed up when Amanda and I were attempting to get my hook off a rock it was stuck on last week.

Sidebar: Should have just cut the line.

I took it all apart, but didn't see anything obviously stripped or broken. So, I put it all back together again.

Sidebar: Pain in the butt (too many little parts), but I'd really rather not buy a new one.

Seems to be working okay, but I won't know until I'm on a lake again.

I made myself a simple iceberg lettuce salad with bottled Italian dressing for dinner.

I went outside around 6:30 p.m. to get the mail and was freezing my ass off! I went inside and checked the temperature on the internet and it was now 64 degrees!!! It's supposed to go below 50 degrees overnight. Did Mother Nature think it was October?

I watched Rambo, First Blood for the millionth time. I started watching Rambo II, but fell asleep about halfway through. later, I woke up for a bathroom break, turned off he TV and went to bed for real.

Hot Thursday

It was supposed to be hot and humid with rain after 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. I woke up just before 7:00 a.m. I ate two slices of cantaloupe for breakfast  (I forgot I bought it and stuck it in the fridge).

Sidebar: My father loved to eat it with vanilla ice cream. I like to eat mine with salt.

I shaved, showered and got dressed in shorts and a t-shirt. There were branches down out back from yesterday's storm, so I went out back and picked them up before it got too hot.

Then I went out front and checked on the rocker. The glue had dried, so I got out the drill, bits and two sizes of deck screws. I pre-drilled the screw holes (to prevent splitting) and then screwed it all in place. I don't trust just the glue.

I ran a sander over the bottom (so there wouldn't be any bumps when rocking) and set it back in place.

I was sweating when I finished up. It was only 11:30 a.m. but already 78 degrees and sticky outside.

I ate leftovers for lunch and then took a break.

I got back up and started rearranging the downstairs, so I could get the toy box back in the kitchen to get back to work on it.

I finally got everything relocated and moved the toy box back (I don't remember it being that heavy!)

I took a break. It was a good thing I did because my daughter, Melissa, called. When we finally hung up, I started dinner. The night's gourmet entree was hot dogs and beans.

I had been been waiting since 4:00 p.m. for more rain. So, I was glad when, at 7:30, it began to thunder loudly. I got up and looked out the kitchen window. It was sprinkling. You could see the splotches of raindrops on the patio. Then it stopped! The thunder kept booming, but there wasn't enough rain to even wet the whole patio. Sigh...

Sidebar: In contrast, my brother Carl said he got over an inch of rain in Mt. Clemens from the same storm.

I found a NCIS marathon that took me to the 11:00 p.m. news and bedtime.

Wednesday

I woke up at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday. I ate some toast and my pills for breakfast, then put on shorts and a t-shirt.  I hadn't made my bed yet, but I went and finished the Blog post. Then I heard a funny sound. So, I went and checked in the bedroom. The damn cat had barfed on the sheets!

So, cursing (I admit) I cleaned up the mess. She missed the blanket that normally protects the bed (I had just thrown it back). So, I sprayed the area with Spray and Wash and put both sheets and the pillow cases (might as well) in the washer and started a load.

It was supposed to start raining around 1:00 a.m., so I went out back and picked up branches that had fallen.

Back inside, I made up the bed. Next, I shaved, showered and got dressed. Then I drove my old clothes and books to the Goodwill.

Since I was that far west, I went to Time Out for lunch. I ordered a side salad.

Sidebar: Bob makes a pretty damn good side salad. It come with iceberg lettuce, two tomato wedges, two thick slices of cucumber, a healthy handful of two cheeses and lots of croutons. I used to ask for bleu cheese dressing, (my favorite), but found that a bit too thick. So, now I get raspberry vinaigrette.

I was just starting to eat when thee of my former coworkers came in: Lenore (my old boss), John Stanford (my last boss) and Courtney. Lenore and John waved to me on their way to a table in the high-top area, but Courtney came over and gave me a hug.

I finished up, paid my tab and went to the bathroom. On the way out, I stopped and chatted with them for a bit. It seems I'd forgotten a few personal items when I left, so I stopped by the old office and picked them up.

Since I was that far west, I drove into Plymouth and took Hines Drive all the way back to Inkster and then went home. There weren't a lot of people (probably too hot) but it was a pleasant drive and it relaxed me (as always).

Back home, it was after 1:30 p.m. with no sign of rain. I changed into shorts and t-shirt again. Then I did one of today's projects. I cleaned the glass surfaces on both nightstands, the dresser and the mirror in the bedroom.

The skies darkened and I thought it would rain. Then the sun would come back out! This happened again and again. It was very frustrating for a guy with a burnt up lawn!

I went out to try and fix the front porch rocker. I've done this many times before as well as painting it several times. But, frankly, this time I don't think I can save it.

Sidebar: This rocker is very old. I carted it here from St. Clair.

This time the one rocker cracked apart in several places.

So, I moved it to the garage apron and filled the various cracks with glue.

I clamped it together and carried it to the front porch (in case it does rain) to dry overnight.

I'll try and screw it together once it's dry.

I put away the glue and washed up. It began to thunder and, around 4:00 p.m., it finally rained! And it rained hard!!!

It only rained about an hour. But, when it was over, I had just under an inch of rain in the gauge. Thank you, rain gods!!!

I ate the other half of the Subway sandwich for dinner.

I could find anything that sounded interesting on TV. So, I read until bedtime, first tin the living room and then on the bed.

"I'm your handyman..."

I set the alarm for 6:30 s.m. to get the trash out to the road by 7:00. The new trash guys pick it up early and I missed it last week.

Then I threw on some clothes and was at the Home Depot by 7:30 a.m. I was standing in the plumbing section, trying to figure out which replacement to buy, when a Home Depot guy offered to help. I told him I had a Crane toilet and he said he was not familiar with what that looked like. I told him I'd taken a picture of the inside before I left home and showed it to him. He said, "Oh, okay. You want this one."

Sidebar: Thank God for cell phone cameras.

Back home, I got to work. Hardest part was get up off the floor (twice) and by 9:00 a.m. the toilet was fixed!

Sidebar: The new toilet guts don't have that big bulb on the long rod. Now they use a float on the tube itself.

I finally shaved, showered and got dressed in shorts and a t-shirt. I went out and retrieved the trashcan.

I checked on the front container planters and, sure enough, they were dry. So, I hand watered them and then the ones out back. I used the rain wand to water the raised bed herb garden as well.

I got dressed in town clothes and went and got my haircut at noon. I realized that, with my early start this morning, I hadn't eaten breakfast nor taken my pills. So, I stopped at the Subway's on the way home and got a foot-long BMT.

Sidebar: I haven't had one in a long, long time.

When I got home, I changed back into shorts and my t-shirt (it was getting warm out there), took my pills and ate half the sandwich. The other half will be Wednesday's lunch or dinner.

I took a break and started reading my book on the lift chair in the living room. It was so nice sitting there, with Caley purring on my lap, that I fell asleep.

I woke up to the doorbell. It was Amanda and it was almost 4:00 p.m.

She said she was supposed to hook up with her girlfriend, but Annie got hung up at her work. She asked if she could hang out for a bit, rather than driving back home to Dearborn and then back here. I said sure.

So, we sat on the front porch and chatted.

When it was after 5:00 p.m. and still no sign of Annie, I suggested going out for dinner. We finally agreed on Olive Garden (haven't been there in years, either). So, I changed into town clothes for the third time today.

We ordered an appetizer (calamari, stuffed mushroom with clams and toasted beef and pork ravioli), the obligatory salad and bread sticks and split an entree of ravioli di portobella. When they brought the entree, it was already on two plates (rather than on one with an extra plate), which I thought was nice.

Sidebar: Everything was excellent, except for the stuffed mushroom with clams.  We both agreed they were disappointing.

Neither of us could finish the ravioli di portobella, so Amanda took the rest home in a box.

Back on San Jose, Annie finally sent a text that she was home, so Amanda left. I changed back into shorts and t-shirt again, LOL!

I watched the rest of the news and then read my book until NCIS came on. Then it was back to the book until NCIS New Orleans. I read my book for an hour afterwards and then went to bed.

Sidebar: For weeks now, I have had real problems falling asleep. Then I saw something on one of the news shows that said if you watch TV or work on the computer, then try and fall asleep, it can be difficult (too much stimulation) Hmmm... So, for the past two days, I have been reading for the last hour of the day and it really helped!

Monday

I woke up just before 7:30 a.m. on Monday. I ate some toast with my pills for breakfast. Then I shaved, showered and got dressed for town.

I had to go to the Credit Union. so I left around 10:30 p.m. I took care of business and decided to go to Time Out for an early lunch. When I got there, both owners asked me where I've been. Bob said, "Since you retired, we never see you!" I told him that, since I retired, I can't afford to eat there! Amanda said it was like old times.

I got a cheeseburger and a cup of chicken noodle soup. Both were good, but I couldn't finish either one. Amanda suggested taking the cheeseburger home, so I did.

Back at home, I changed clothes and started today's project: Cleaning out the bedroom closets. I made good progress, getting rid of junk and bagging up clothes that don't fit or I never wear to give to Goodwill.

I took a walk in the afternoon. Then I got the trash ready for tomorrow morning.

I opened a small can of beans and ate them with the rest of the cheeseburger for dinner.

I realized that my toilet tank is leaking into the bowl! No wonder why my water bills suddenly got so high. I didn't feel like getting dressed again, so I decided I'd go to Home Depot in the morning and get new guts for it. I need a haircut anyway.

I watched TV and went to bed after the 11:00 p.m. news.
