Finally Friday!!!

It was cold as hell on Friday morning with a wicked 22 mph wind here in Redford. So, I not only donned my coat, but my knit hat and gloves as well.

When I backed out onto the road, I found it had re-froze (is that a word?) into a solid sheet of ice! I put it into four wheel drive, but, of course, that didn’t help. But, I inched my way to Plymouth Road, which had been salted and only had occasional spots of black ice.

Sidebar: Whenever I think about four wheel drive (which works great in snow), I always laugh and think of something my Brother Pete told me, back in the day. I was talking about buying a Jeep with “four wheel drive” (I ultimately bought a Volkswagen Thing) and he said, “John, four wheel drive just means you can get farther off-road before you get stuck!” Words to live by…

I miss that big, crazy dude.

Anyway, I went to Time Out for lunch. I normally order off their “specials” menu, just so I can try something new. So, today, I got a BBQ chicken breast with bacon sandwich (sounded good) and some potato and beef soup. The soup was excellent (as I’ve said before, Bob makes wicked awesome soup) but I wasn’t that impressed with the sandwich.

Then I went and got the truck washed. I wanted to get the salt and dirt off of it. It was funny, as the guy outside, who wiped down my truck, tapped on my window and apologized for not wiping down the truck bed. They said the water on it had already frozen and they didn’t want to scratch my paint. I thanked him and tipped him two bucks.

The afternoon passed slowly as they always do on a Friday/Payday. The only excitement I had was when the Asset Coordinator and one of the Techs told me my metrics (which I report each month) were wrong! They claimed I was “double-dipping” using logs as new equipment purchasing. I told them that was not the metric. They repeated their claim, saying not every new employee gets a new computer or laptop. I said I know that and I repeated that was not the metric.

Sidebar: You have to love new, enthusiastic employees. If they would have just asked, I would have explained. But, they want to change the world!

Note: I gather data on purchases of new computers, laptops, docking stations, etc., from our ERP system, not logs.

The logs are used to show trends about requests for various equipment over the last calendar year (i.e. 53% were for laptops, only 20% were for desktops and, oh, yeah, 2% of the people needed dual monitors). It’s only to give upper management a hint so they can adjust the budget estimations accordingly.

So, I printed off my reports and patiently explained it to them and they finally got it. (Geesh!)

I left work at 5:00 p.m. and got home with no trouble.

I treated the damn cat and changed clothes. Since it was payday, I adjusted my check register to reflect my pay and the automatic deductions that were coming. Then I added into my spreadsheet the new water and sewage bill I got in the mail today.

For dinner, I heated up just one of those bean burritos (the only thing I can come up with to call them) I had made and a packet of Uncle Ben’s Spanish rice.  I skipped the stupid salsa and doused everything with Frank’s Red Hot Sauce.

My lips are still burning, but it was much, much better.  This is now on my weekday meal list.

I watched two taped shows and then switched to reading until bedtime.

Thursday, Snow Day…

It was supposed to be freezing rain at 5:00 a.m. on Thursday. But, when I woke up, it didn’t look like it was raining (or snowing) at all.

However, when I pulled out of the driveway, there was a thin coating of ice and snow on San Jose. But, when I got to Plymouth Road, it was just wet. I guessed they had salted it.

So, it was, like the New York blizzard of 2015, a nonevent. At least, that’s what I thought…

It switched to all snow, but the temperature was above freezing and the snow just kept melting.

I had planned on just going to Time Out for lunch, but Vicky asked me what I was doing. So, I told her. She said she needed to get out (she had a stressful morning). I suggested a new restaurant (New Mexico) on Ford Road I’d heard about on the news. She suggested the combination Hispanic grocery store/restaurant that Michelle, her and I went to a while back. I told her I couldn’t remember the name, but she did. I Googled it.

So we snuck out (Daryl had asked her to go to Buddy’s, but she had declined, saying she brought her lunch). No sense in hurting his feelings.

We went to Dos Hermanos Restaurant on Ford Road in Westland. It’s a tiny place, half Hispanic grocery store and half restaurant, with very little parking. But, we lucked out and got a spot.

She ordered (in Spanish) the Torta de Pollo: a huge Mexican sandwich of grilled chicken, served on a Mexican roll with onions, tomatoes, jalapeƱos and lettuce.

I ordered (in English) the Enchiladas Rojas: Three rolled corn tortilla filled with your choice of meat, beef, chicken or pork (I took beef). It was smothered in homemade red enchilada sauce and topped with cheese, served with beans and rice.

It was WAY too much food (for me) but I kept on eating it.

Sidebar: When will I ever learn?

We snuck back into work and I spent the rest of the day burping.

The snow started to stick. So, I checked the roads on Goggle Maps around 3:00 p.m. and they showed I-96 as slow. Plymouth Road was just as slow. Crap!

But, by 5:00 p.m., Google Maps show I-96 as fast again. So they must have plowed and/or salted.

Note: I think if the temperature was colder, we would have gotten a significant amount of snow on the ground (it snowed all day). But, with all the melting, I doubt there was a half inch accumulation.

I got home five minutes late. I treated Caley and then went into the bedroom to change my clothes. She had barfed on the blanket! Nice… So, I cleaned it off and stuck it in the washer. Back in the bedroom, changing clothes, I realized the barf had soaked though onto the bedspread. Damn!

So, when the first load was in the dryer, I started a second. I may never get to sleep tonight!

I turned on the Red Wings game, just before the scored their first goal and tied the game. So, I was excited. But, we got our butts kicked 5-1.

I was still full from lunch, so I ate dinner late. I microwaved a sweet potato and ate that with butter and salt.

The bedspread was finally dried (it takes two times in the dryer) so I remade the bed and went to sleep.

Wednesday

It was still cold on Wednesday. Amy had posted a photo on Facebook, saying it was only 41 days to spring, and I can’t wait!

I went to Time Out and got a bowl of German Potato soup and two hot dogs. I didn’t have any errands, so I went back to work and read a book.

After work, I did the Wednesday wash. I noticed the cauliflower I had bought was starting to go bad. So, I cut the bad parts off and cooked the rest of it. I ate it with butter and salt for my dinner.

I had just enough new dirty dishes to run the dishwasher, so I did that too.

I got my W-2s and had planned on doing my taxes tonight. But, I really didn’t feel like it (to depressing). So, I watched TV until bedtime.
